It'd help to have your zone #. Your plan of putting them on the south side of the house - I'm assuming near a wall that would retain the sun's heat - is a step in the right direction. Depending on how cold your winters get, figs will freeze to the ground during a cold snap. You hear of the occasional tree being hardier than normal, but that is definitely the exception. A lot of people do the fig shuffle - keep their trees potted and bring them in during the winter after they go dormant. That is one reliable way to get fruit every year.

It seems that the Celeste fig is hardy to zone 7, which includes most of Tennessee. But you're on the northern boundary of it's hardiness zone so it might need protection in some of the coldest parts of the winter. My parents live in the same general area.

I have not grown a Celeste fig, however, I had a brown turkey fig at my old house that had reached about 12 feet tall and wide by the time I sold that house. Currently I have a couple of other varieties but they are still small (one is an LSU Gold and the other is one a friend gave me. I don't remember the variety on that one)

Thanks for the replies. Yes we are about 20 miles south of the Ky border. Thinking about using pvc pipe and clear plastic to create a greenhouse in winter for each tree until I can get them mature. I think I read Celeste were hardy to zone 8. Anyone tried anything like the greenhouse?

I haven't had the need! However a lot of people winterize their figs every year. You can do an online search or check out the OurFigs forum, lots of good information there.
