Is that wood?

It’s wood-like vinyl. We are fully re-doing our kitchen in a few years but want to do some temporary updates now. The room with the wood is the kitchen area and the family room next to it needs something else. Ideally it would be the same throughout but the old owners had some old laminate flooring that needs to come up and the height would be different.

How wide is the opening between your kitchen and family room? You might be able to use a t-mold or a reducer between the flooring in each room and run it one direction in the kitchen and opposite direction in the family room and use the wood look vinyl in both. Even if you use another flooring in the family room, you may need a t-mold or reducer between flooring if there is a height difference.

Just a thought, JenM, if your subfloors are plywood, can’t you add an additional layer to raise the height of the lowest floor?

It’s cement sub-floor. But wondering if we could add a “layer” and make it work.

Nothing real wood looks good with fake gray plastic floors.

If you have a concrete slab, why is there a difference in your subfloor heights? It would not be a good idea to add a layer of plywood to a concrete slab because of potential moisture problems. Differences in heights is why transition strips were created.

Please post photos of where your floors join so everyone can see what you have to work with, and they will hopefully be able to help you.

I would leave it all alone and live with what you have in FR until you do your kitchen remodel then do the flooring at once and make it all match. You can fix subflooring then.

There are some nice click lock vinyl tile look products on the market, too. Maybe you could use an LVT in your kitchen and the vinyl wood look plank in your family room.

If you are going to use a 2nd product in the other parts of the home you dont want them to look like you tried to match them poorly . Its better they have their own individual look.
