Wood or Fiberglass Door? How close to the door are the floors? Odds of getting a match to your floors are next to zero. I would plan to make it contrast.

IMO, houses with painted siding are more harmonious with painted trim and doors.

Houses with stained siding are more harmonious with stained trim and doors.

Paint and stain are not very harmonious when used together, either on the exterior or interior.

^Virgil, you lost me on that one. I know you were stating your opinion, but doesn't stain get paired with paint even when it's just on the floor or furniture? Many houses from the Victorian Era through World War II and several in the Mid-century had stained front doors on otherwise painted or painted with masonry houses. In the rise of steel and fiberglass front entrance they were much less common for a while, and I think we are now seeing such a resurgence because many of the trendy current styles draw from the early 20th century.

That said, you will have to look at the color of your door stain not only with your interior floor but against the colors on the outside of your house. You want a stain color that is going to stand out but is harmonious with the overall tone of the color schemes. For instance, you don't want a dark door if your trim and siding is also dark, but also be conscious that if you for instance have a red brick some wood tones are going to look yellow or even greenish in comparison.

Your door does not need to match your floors, but as millworkman suggested, if you are going to match they should be exact, not a near match. Typically I'm used to woodwork and doors being darker than the floor, but the trend of very dark floors has upended that. In that case I would likely go for a medium dark, red tinted stain for the door. But it depends on everything else going on.

The door will look different than the floor, but we just normally try to get it close. Also, one thing to consider here is the skill level of the person staining the door. Staining a fiberglass door is probably one of the most difficult things to do. I drive around and look at all the fiberglass doors that people have stained over the years and over 90 percent of them just look bad. A factory stained door looks perfect though.

Did you decide what to do yet? We are in a similar situation -- we are choosing a fiberglass door and have dark hardwood flooring in our entry. We are leaning towards simply painting the inside of the entry door white to match our trim but would love to see what you did.

@kariyara we chose to finish on site! No prefinish. I talked to my builder and another close friend who builds and that was their recommendation. I’m a lot happier with that choice as I was worried the prefinish wouldnt‘t be what I hoped and then I couldn’t change it! Hope you make a decision that feels right to you I know how stressful it can be!
