I am a total novice. I would leave this to the pros here.... but my instant thought is ouch for the plant. I know you can put a layer of protection on with uv plantguard paint. But I am not sure how it would react after the outer layer peeled off ????? Anyone else welcome to chime in.

hello! To me looks like a bad sunburn, it happened to one of mines, did you cut to see if the caudex has brown parts inside? The caudex had to be white when is healthy... I hope it helps, my english its not good

should have just scratched off a small section. If its anything like a tree, you just girdled it and it will die soon. I doubt it can be good for the plant. Those roots dont look great either, they are usually nice and white. They look dead or under watered. Never seen anything like this before. The part of the skin that is left that we can see in the pic look fine. I'd say buy another one. You can get one twice that size for $40 from marias garden in florida. She ships.
