Need help with choosing tree

I bought a house and I need to replace a tree. I’m not sure where to start. Looking for some suggestions on a couple of trees that could work in my space.

I am in Calgary (gardening zone 4a). I am replacing some kind of flowering crabapple (thunderchild?) that is growing crazy.

It needs to fit between the shed (which is a playhouse) and the other tree. About 12.5 feet between them. I want to block out some neighbors. Ideally canopy would start at 7 feet so I have easy access to playhouse. It could be planted closer to shed and extend over shed if possible. Flowering was nice but not necessary.

The last picture is of the trees beside it.

Any thoughts?

Have you lived there long? Have you seen all those trees in leaf yet? To me there already appear to be a lot of trees. Could you wait and see if you really need any more? Perhaps you could get what you want by simply reducing the crabapple to a single stem and limbing it up?

Ps the trees already along the fence look like Aspens.

Forgot to mention the space between the deck and fence is 7.5 feet.

Seems an evergreen would be lovely. A deciduous tree would be bare over six months of the year. So find a Evergreen that would work in your zone.

One possibility. You could do 3 of these along fence line staggered with some under plant trees such as flowering fruit for the area. Might even try a Red Bud.

==>>> first.. the above.. you prune trees to the height you want ... its called raising the canopy ... just for future reference ... the alternative is to use the checkbook to buy it the size and height you want ... and a 12 to 15 foot tall transplant is going to be very expensive .... not to mention.. you might be challenged as to how to get it back there ....

i agree with flora ... i think you already have about twice as many trees as that yard will hold .... i would also like to see them in leaf.. to change my mind ...

any chance of a pic of the crab itself??? ... i just dont see it in the pix above ... and i dont understand what the problem is ...

if you are looking for privacy on the deck.. i think your deck is where you provide it ... perhaps a wall off one side.. to block the direct view ... but i might guess they wont let you build one???

i like the drape version ... and wonder if that might be allowed.. if permanent walls arent???

There are already a lot of trees, but if you do decide to put another one (might as well, you can always just remove them if problems arise) columnar blue spruce or weeping white spruce. Your neighborhood needs some evergreens and a skinny one would look good there.

Crimson Spire Oak which hangs on to leaves throughout the winter.

Birthday Candle is another one bit tougher to find.

I was going to suggest a narrow spruce as well, but I fear it would start to look shabby on the lower branches from lack of sunlight. What about a columnar crabapple or serviceberry? I don't think you've got room for a tree that gets large, like an oak.

Hi, a Japanese lilac could work. Here’s a picture of mine (Ivory Silk). The canopy starts at about 6 feet.

Amelanchier canadensis is also a really good choice. 3 season interest, and the berries are delicious! My kids think they’re better than blueberries. :)
