I think it's very unlikely to work. Have you any evidence of anyone successfully producing a chimera by this method? Hoping may not be enough!

I am aware of that, but you don't know if you don't try.

I'm hoping they will just "grow together" and hopefully there will be some mixing of cells. The graft union is in the same area where it's going to be rooting.

This would not be a chimera. If it works at all, it'll be a regular splice graft. Shoots that extend out each side would only carry the cells of it's own meristem tissue on that side, not mixed cells from both genetic donors. Also the green leafed variety is going to grow much faster than the pale leafed side.
