I was out pretty much all day in relative warmth but still lots of snow left to melt. Geranium macrorrhizum is about the only thing poking its evergreen foliage out from the edges of snowbanks that I can see. There is hope for me!

I am soooo excited!!! In a new house that is made for growing hostas!! I transplanted some of favorites. Winter was sooo long!!! Went to a

garden center and got some beautiful bare root Sum and Substance and Bleeding Heart. Nowcan I remember where I planted things, I did get pansies in!!!

Amen to the "so great to see something green". I was out doing lots of garden chores today. I do see some pips but not everything is pipping yet. So I will wait another week or so to fertilize. But I have peonies up and lots of other miscellaneous things. I think it's especially gratifying when plants you weren't sure would make it are showing signs of life. Of course I love all the old faithfuls as well. Oh happy days.

Nicholsworth, is that a Dutchman's Breeches in your one pic? I love seeing that little clump of ferny foliage so early in the spring!

I'm also thrilled with some returning plants, that I thought were goners, popmama. I ordered a "special" pricey arum last spring, that came as a single little damaged leaf. It withered away pretty quickly, and I thought it was done for,... till a week ago,...that one little leaf is back again!

Thank you for showing your signs of spring. Still waiting here for hostas to "pop" crocus are growing and a few are blooming. Love this time of year, so exciting. Every day I like to take a stroll through the garden and see what is new.

StevePA..yes you're right..that's a Dutchman's Breeches..a volunteer..I love it..I love the funny little white blooms..I hope your arum comes back strong..your trillium is gorgeous..mine are not as far along as yours..my trillium blooms are red (burgundy)..yours too?..I've also seen yellow blooms online..

Beth..isn't it funny how exciting it is when we see a plant coming up?..it's like the first time we've ever seen it!..spring never gets old does it?..

n2hostas - may I ask where you get bare root hostas and other plants in Kansas? I’m in the KC area. Would it be far for me?

popmama - yes, it’s so good to see them come back, when you’re not sure they will! Most of mine are visible (at least a little bit) but a few aren’t up at all yet.

Nicholsw, yep, my trillium flowers are also that burgundy red. I much prefer it over the yellows. I also have one very sloooooowly expanding clump of the white grandiflorum. The foliage isn't nearly as interesting as these though. Nice warm temps this weekend, things are really moving along! Such a thrill!

StevePA..I was out until dark!..I found so many other clumps of trillium that were bigger and prettier than the one that I posted :-( I love those little things..it's tricky not to step on them..they're everywhere..I prefer the burgundy blooms too..the white grandiflorum sounds difficult..it is thrilling that winter is OVER!!

BME does that! It seems to grow up on top of itself. Wonder why. Mine has been divided to share about 6 times and it still does that. After a few years my other mice are doing that too. Genetics.

Babka..I know this happens to others too..I love BMEs but I wish they would stay IN the ground..at least they're small and easy to work with..

I seem to remember that Ken once said to just let the hostas do what they want (words to that effect)... that they adjust themselves in the soil to their preferred depth. But that it was different from winter heave of smaller or less-established plants. Since then I’ve just let that BMEs do it’s thing. It’s definitely solidly in the ground. I put mulch around it, and once it leafs-out it looks just fine.

Windymess, Grass Pad next door to a Chevrolet dealership, sweetie was looking at Corvette. I felt like he could humor me with a quick visit to a garden center! 199 street and 69 maybe other Grass Pads have them too.

windymess..I was thinking about my BME first thing this morning..even before I pulled up Gardenweb!..I remember Ken's comment too..but mine is so high I don't think(?) mulch will fix it..I also think it's ugly as it is..

oursteelers..one nice thing about being "bonkers"..when we're out early, late, in the rain, etc it's quiet and peaceful.. since we're outside alone Lol..

Cicely..in a few weeks it will be "summer" at your house!..I would enjoy a longer growing season..but I shouldn't complain..I am grateful for my wooded lot and the feeling of living in a forest with wildlife..not as warm as I would like but so enjoyable..I saw the fox yesterday and again this morning :-)

It is. I go to Hostaparadise (Fransen) once a year and also to Hostaworld (van den Top) which is only about 100km away. Fortunately, my car is very small so I can't spend too much money.

sometimes it's good to have limitations (small car)..forces you to choose wisely..you won't buy more than you have space for or time and energy to care for..

Fire Island..Wheee..my peonies are bigger..I think almost all of my hosta have pips..I left the leaves covering most of them but the ones I checked have pips..I took all of these pics today..

the shrubs have leaves..brunnera has doubled since last week..Blue Mouse Ears in this pot stayed in the soil..tiny spring wildflower..I'm over the hurdle..winter's gone..

You all with your trilliums make me so envious! I have one! I'm grateful that there is one, but it's just one! Haha. It was nearly 80 degrees today. Tomorrow, snow. I covered my bleeding heart. I think I should cover my peonies. They are pretty far out of the ground. Sigh...this time of year can be tricky.

popmama..oh no..snow for you and you have new plants :-( spring IS tricky..warm cold warm cold..I have some colder temps ahead too..and too many plants to cover..all I can do is wait and hope for the best..

It is a tricky time of year for those of you with plants already up. I wait a long time and still have issues with unseasonally late freezes/frosts. A few years ago was the worst ever. May 23rd after everything was leafed out we had a hard freeze. That was a difficult pill to swallow. I need some cheese to go with my w(h)ine lol!

A hard freeze after May 23rd would send me first into a panic attack and then a deep depression. I get there is some fluctuation but by the end of May I have expectations!!!!!

Yes, oursteelers panic and depression for sure. It is no fun seeing plants turn to mush, then knowing the ones that seemed better off would show the damage later.

We have expectations and that was a shocker but the last frost date here is actually June 6th. Knock on wood that has never happened for me but there was a lady nearby that lived in a frost pocket (relatively deep hills and valleys here). She would plant her veggies over & over again hoping for the best each year.

I also greet the newcomers, they are like old friends I haven't seen in awhile. No hostas here just a few "numbs' the crocus are in full swing though.
