It is not a morning glory. It could be a clematis but the photo is not close enough to give a clear view. Is anything left of it that you take a closer shot of the flowers and leaves? Doesn't matter if chopped down or not.

What's left of the stem does look a lot like a mature clematis.

So everything that was chopped down had yet to bloom. It was all brown (dead?) vine. But I think you may be right about it being a clematis after I looked at more pictures online. I wish I had a better picture of it when it was fully bloomed.

Do you know if the stem appears healthy? Any chance it may regrow?

It certainly could regrow. Established clematis vines are incredibly tough and durable plants. But I have never had great luck with one that had that large of a basal stem being cut off that low. I think you will just have to wait and see :-)

I was able to find some of the leaves that were chopped down. I also took another picture of the base of the stem. Do you know if these buds are part of the clematis or a different plant?

The buds in the last picture look like Hostas.

If it bloomed in early Fall and the blooms had a strong, sweet smell, it could be a Sweet Autumn Clematis. I would cut back that stalk to below the damaged area and leave it alone. Make sure it's a smooth cut, preferably at a slight angle so water will run off . If it is a Clematis it may grow back from the roots; only time will tell.

I can't help but wonder how anyone could "inadvertently" cut down something that large ?

Thanks for the advice. There was a miscommunication to the gardener - hence the inadvertent cut down.

Everything discernible in these shots points to it being a clematis. Morning glories produce trumpet shaped flowers.

Update here. So it’s been about a month since the clematis was pruned ‘too hard’. I was pleasantly surprised to see some new buds and what looks like a possible vine regrowing today. Any recommendations moving forward? Should I cut the trunk back anymore or just let it be?
