Bloodgood Japanese Maple...

Hello everyone!

I recently planted a gorgeous bloodgood Japanese maple in my backyard and can’t decide whether to add mulch around the tree or some sort of landscaping rocks. I love the looks of rocks but I’m not sure if the JM would do better in mulch? Any advice?

Rocks will just collect all manner of debris, are hard to clean debris out of and will invariably sprout weeds....that are also hard to remove. A bark mulch is a much better idea, both for of ease of maintenance and for soil improvement as it slowly degrades. It just has to be refreshed/topped off every so often.
