Upper Cabinets Design?

Here is the design for the back wall of upper kitchen cabinets that are behind the island. I'll post a pic if necessary. The largest cabinet would be centered behind the island. It's 15 inches deep versus 12 inches deep like the rest. It's also 4 inches higher than the rest. They are suggesting a larger crown on that one cabinet, also. It would have glass doors. I was thinking a beaded glass for all the glass doors. We would light all the cabinets with glass. There would be no other cabinets with glass on the other two walls. What do you all think of this design? Any suggestions to improve it?

Alex, in answer to your question on the other thread, the large cabinet is centered behind the island, but the island is not centered in the kitchen due to a change we made to one of the corners of the kitchen.

Salnova, that is what my cabinet guy said. Not putting glass in that large cabinet would give some relief.

I never worry too much about things being centered on other things in a kitchen (like your island) because it seems it would only be centered when you are standing in the ONE exact spot to see everything in relation to everything else. You're not static in a kitchen and if you move to one side or another, you won't see what's not centered. (of course I'd want the cabinet under it to be centered under the sink and the hood centered over the stove, etc).

I think the cabinet arrangement looks fine and really like the tall cabinet between the others with glass in the top. They look tall and not very reachable/usable but if you'll be lighting them, they'd be lovely for display.

eta: I just saw the tall cabinet would be glass, too. Would it work to have plain glass so you could display serving pieces, or do you need the covered storage? I think it would also work to have just the tall cabinet be glass for display and the uppers be wood.

It's a huge amount of storage. Do you already know what items will be stored where?

You don't say what causes you to second-guess the design. One thing I'd worry about is if they would appear looming. That's hard to tell without a complete floor plan. As long as you feel there's enough space, I think it's great.

Olychick, yes, I'll display something in them. I'm not sure what, yet!

Yes, I think you're right - plain glass is better for displaying. I think I'll leave the large cabinet without glass to give some relief to all the glass and take advantage of not having to display anything in it.

Alex, I'll take all the storage I can get! :) I will have plenty to put in all the cabinets. I'm just not sure what I want to display in the glass uppers.

I'm second guessing everything because of the epic fail that is on my wall now. :( My ceilings are 11 feet to the soffit. These cabinets will come to 62"-64" with the crown so I will still have roughly 15" above them.

My mother's kitchen has that issue. She uses the space to display her collection of Chinese ceramics. Her cabinet fronts are solid, though, so the display on top doesn't compete with the contents of the cabinets.

If that were my kitchen, I would only use glass in the top section of cabinets for display and leave all of the rest as solid wood doors.

Would it look odd to have pulls on the taller cabinet and knobs on the rest?

It might look okay. Lots of people have pulls on their drawers and knobs on the cabinets which is a similar mix. I think you would just have to tape some up and see if you like the look.

Yes, I have pulls on the drawers and lower cabinets, with the exception of 3 very small drawers that I have knobs on. So the taller upper cabinet would be in good company with the lowers. I thought maybe putting handles on that one and knobs on the other uppers would help it stand out a little more.

I have some upper glass cabinets for display and have always thought it would be cool to put crystal or glass knobs on those doors. I didn't do it but if I ever change the hardware or need a change I will.

The cabinets are mostly in, but the paint color is not exactly matching the lowers. A different company painted those. So they are going to pull the doors on the uppers and repaint them to correctly match the lowers. Besides that, what do you think of the design? I'll be putting handles on the uppers and knobs on the stacked.

Gorgeous, very clean and uncluttered. I love your backsplash. The handles and knobs will be the perfect finishing touch. What kind of metal did you choose?

Dedtired, thank you! I used and will use Hickory Hardware Studio Collection in satin. The handles are 8 inches long to match the size of most of the drawers.

We will be repainting the walls a lighter greige color called BM Baby Fawn. But I'm not sure what I want to do with the window. I was thinking of putting in a woven wood Roman shade to warm up the room. What do you think?

Woven wooden would look great on the window.

Oh, now I see the hardware on the lower cabs. Very nice! I like the idea of woven wood as long as the color is light and somehow coordinates with the drapes you already have.
