Show me your red roses

I don't have any of these roses anymore, they are from my old house or died. But I need some red in my garden! I just planted Hope for Humanity but would love to see yours and get any suggestions for great red roses in zone 6.

    Beautiful roses!

I suppose I'm weird because I really don't care for red roses, especially the really bright orange-red ones, but do like roses that look more purple than red. One I love is an Austin, Wild Edric, which will always have a place in my garden.

Red roses are my favorite actually, but I have trouble placing them seamlessly into the landscape.

I think I've mentioned before that I'm not good with color palates.

Kristine, what is your darkest red?

I really like the ones that won't turn bright pink in sun.

And also prefer the ones trending toward purple instead of orange/pink.

    JC-

AGvH is a slow growing, healthy plant in my LV garden. It does not have a very quick repeat, and it has not been the most floriferous when it blooms. It is in year five. The blooms are very pretty. However, very little fragrance has been detected. I purchased an own-root plant from Angel Gardens. I found myself wanting more from it if that makes sense? I would not grow it in my new garden. Maybe it favors a climate with more humidity, lower temperatures... actually, I think all of my roses would to a degree but...

The images do not reflect the beauty of Francis Dubreuil/Barcelona's bloom. I was pleased with the repeat cycle and abundant blooms produced by F.D. Fungal disease etc. are not an issue in the dry, arid LV climate so I cannot report on that. I would definitely grow this rose again.

Your Oklahoma bloom/image is gorgeous, Mossy. It is one of my favorite dark red roses. Oklahoma is very fragrant and becomes tall in a warm climate.

Everyone has some really nice reds. Here’s a sampling of mine

    DARCEY BUSSELL

    FIREFIGHTER, so fragrant

OUT OF ROSENHEIM, was new last year, had an orange tinge, hope that goes away this year.

    DUBLIN BAY

ROUGE ROYALE, this was early in the season last year, the later blooms were prettier, wonderful fragrance!

LIEBESZAUBER is my best red, It always does good here and the blooms have good substance. The fragrance comes through when the temps are cooler.

DARK DESIRE - I really like this rose, my photos don’t do it justice, so far mine hasn’t been fragrant. Hope that changes.

I ordered two OKLAHOMA roses this year. One on multiflora and the other own root. I’m anxious to see how they do. I’ve also planted Munstead Wood, anxious to see how it does too. Desertgarden yours is gorgeous!

I am not the biggest fan of red rose but I started to fall in love with deep deep purple red cupcake looking reds. I just set up one bed exclusively for red roses as their color is not so easy to coordinate with other colors in landscaping design. I just planted two of this rose (bareroot) no bloom yet but this photo was taken during one of my recent trips overseas. It’s Valentina Casucci, AKA Rouge Royale. It was end of summer there while the blooms were huge - 5” across. The display garden dedicated at least four beds (at least a hundred plants) for this one variety. Hope mine will flower soon and just look like that!

May I ask, what rose is the large pink bloom underneath your Munstead Wood, Kristine?

My Munstead Woods usually appear deep red, and then like your Darcey Bussell when the temperatures increase.

Gorgeous! Don't you love the fragrance? Is this the climber? I'm interested who sent you such nice plants. : )

    Mine is the climbing version.

Got it from Roses Unlimited. I already want to order another one.

I couldn't smell anything on this one- it looks like it's been open for a while.

I posted in the other thread, but I got 6 great plants from them- 2 others were completely trashed en route, but clearly very healthy and robust before that.

Guyground - your Linda Campbell WOWs me every year!

These are all beautiful! I love reds!

These are all beautiful! I have a baby Francis Dubreuil/Barcelona planted last fall but no buds yet. I also just planted a Don Juan I found in a body bag at HD for $9.

Wow, Rouge Royale is one red rose I've always admired, and the photos here show its beauty, with that old-rose, many petaled look.

More Munstead Wood. Taken in the heat of last year in September.

Munstead Wood again, when the weather is cooler. Much darker.

I'm posting this using the Android app, so hopefully it works... Here are photos of (hopefully in order) The Prince (a weak rose, but with the extra attention), Tradescant (a perfect small climber), a rose sold as 'Souvenir du Dr Jamain' from Rogue Valley...but the stems are too prickly, General Gallieni (not a pure red, but it does darken considerably in the heat of summer), climbing 'Etoile de Holland' (so fragrant!), and Don Juan (always in bloom despite neglect and great for cutting).

I would love to hear about Cadenza.

Hoang Ton, lovely photos from your garden, and your roses look wonderful. Greetings from a former neighbor! I'm from Wakulla County.

JC, you need 'Etoile de Hollande', too. I definitely want 'Oklahoma', when I can find it here in Europe. It's available but isn't all over the place. Also 'Barcelona', which I had, but lost due to poor planting.

I must say, there are some beautiful roses here.

Cadenza makes a nice rounded bush here. The flowers last forever, vapor. I'll try to take photos this Spring.

Sheila thanks. I consider it every spring from a r e! Have to look at my order I may have got it. If not maybe next year.

Melissa, Italy via Wakulla County? Wow!

Im a 7th generation Floridian from Lake County. Well, I was at least ha.

I just gave in and got 2 Oklahoma bags from Home Depot today.

Red HTs are my current favorite for the vase. We’ll see what happens because I have planted a lot of David Austin’s.

JC, nice to meet another Floridian!

I was out yesterday cleaning up a massively overgrown 'Spray Cecile Brunner', and hoping to get soon to its neighbor 'Papa Gontier', which comes in here because it's red, or could be called red, in that pinkish-red style of Tea roses. 'Papa Gontier' is a wreck, with smashed canes, old diseased growth...you name it. But all the same, it's currently covered with the largest, shapeliest, most joyful looking blooms you can imagine. What a trooper. I bring it up because I don't think it gets much attention, but it's a great rose.

Desert, the pink rose is Beverly, a big buxom gal getting fresh with Munstead.

John, holy moly you have some pretty reds.

Any one considering Oklahoma should go for it. Mine took right off and stayed in bloom all season.

Rouge Royal is officially on my list.

Munstead Wood is getting to me...

If you are looking for hardiness - Canadian Shield would fit the bill. It's a beast, going into it's 3rd year & very hardy. It's a good landscape rose. Individual blooms are not swoon worthy, but it's very prolific & easy to grow. AC Navy Lady is also known for hardiness. And all of my Austin's make it through winter. I'm in a zone that requires hard pruning each spring. But being shrub roses they all have pretty good vigour.
