loniceria brownii

3rd year for this Honeysuckle vine in full sun. Last year I cut off all the dead stuff since I saw new growth from the base. It never flowered. This year, also, new growth from the base. I have not pruned the old growth. My question is -- should I prune old growth, or will new growth eventually come from the old? I searched all over and have not seen anything about die back in my zone. I am about 35 miles SW of Chicago. Thanks.
