What room is it in? I would take out shelves and put in a mirror, cut to fit the space inside the frame.

Patching with sheetrock is cheap and easy.

Anything lit up looks more important. Put up a collection of geometric objects, thrift shop glassware, interesting collectibles, old tools, gadgets of any kind, or china. Artwork will look okay but the shelf hardware will show.

We can't judge the scale of it except for the relationship with the light switches, in which case it looks to be quite large. What room is this in?

It is massive. Over 60” wide. It’s right by the front door in the formal entryway so that is why it’s bothering me so much. It’s the first thing you see when you walk in the house. Thank you all for the ideas

That size would be perfect for a large piece of art or a group of smaller pieces, you haven’t told us what type of lighting but the right type / wattage could enhance the art. I’d remove the dust collecting glass shelves & hardware first.

This wasn't built for photos - more likely for a collection of glass or figurines of some sort. If you don't want to use it, remove the shelves for now. Find a beautiful wallpaper that matches your style to put there until you can fill the space with art. The whole thing is easy to remove though if you don't want it. They just cap off the lighting wires and drywall, patch and paint.

I would remove the shelves and fill the slots and paint the frame black. Find a wallpaper mural you like that fills it nicely...but stay classy with this...no giant sharks or faux windows to a vineyard...
