Carrara for majority of bathroom

Liked this accent but no clue how or where to incorporate it. Ideas?

Here are photos of current bathroom. Tub will be ripped out & replaced with shower with glass door. Pretty small bathroom. Am thinking to do the white carrara with one wall being an accent wall with the above accent tile posted? Either the wide wall in the shower (back wall) or the wall behind the vanity. Thoughts?

I would skip any accent just an extra expense

I wouldn’t touch that bath. It really isn't bad. . You’ll spend 20K, and you will be lucky to get a 10K bump in home value when you are done. Especially if you use that accent tile. It’s a very personal choice that will turn off just as many buyers as it does attract.

What a bath remodel like that will definitely do is make that bathroom stand out in your house. And not in a good way. Unless all of the rest of the house is done in The 2015 Hot Topic Fad Prom Dress of the Moment, the rest of the house is going to look like the poor girl whose mom made her make her prom dress from a 1984 Butterick pattern. At least if everyone is dressed close to the same 1984 look, no one looks sad and lost.

Check the wet CoF of that tile. We looked at similar, but realized we'd kill ourselves.

We may consider keeping the tub but getting it painted white at least. The almond color just clashes with everything I like. We did want to incorporate an accent somewhere so it wasn't just all white. The rest of the house is mostly updated. This is the bathroom to our guest room that will be used pretty frequently so we'd really like an updating.

@patricia thanks for the response! I totally agree. The more i looked at the accent the more i felt something was off. I was actually thinking of recreating this with the carrara and i have this black & white tile already from where i used it in my laundry room. Kind of like this photo - tile the one wall and do everything else in the white carrara with gold accents and a black or white vanity.

@Patricia would you use the accent piece (black and white tile) behind the wall where the vanity is on or in the shower wall as pictured above?

I would not mix cement tiles with cararra ever. One is a very thick and casual tile and the other not. I like the one you posted in the first post and if you really wanted to it could go on the one wall in the shower but no niches made with it please. Then a simple black hex for the shower floor

@patricia oh i see which you are talking about. We aren’t doing any niches just a flat wall with an accent piece. I’ve found lots of photos of people using the black & white farmhouse tile as an accent wall with plain white porcelain tiles it appears. Why is this a no-no? Our white tile is also porcelain.

Carrara is formal. Cement tiles are casual. The whole feel of them clashes.

really Nancy, and Patricia? I guess my bathroom just 'clashes'. Cement tiles are not 'casual'. They've been used for hundreds of years. it just depends on the overall style.

Leana, I used similar cement black white tiles for my 'plant wall'. I have a black marble hex in the shower and 4x16 carrara tiles in herringbone on the outer floor

what you could do for the shower is plain white tiles along w/your full wall of cement tiles.

I used 4x12's, but you could opt for large tiles if you prefer.

Use your marble porcelain for the floors outside.

I actually love your accent tiles, but not with your cement tiles. and I don't recommend using the real marble w/the fake stuff. You could use those marble accents for your bathroom floor, cement wall in the shower, and plain white tiles on the other walls. You could also look for a less busier type of cement tile

for example, to use w/your porcelain tile, choose one of the softer gray/white designs.

are you doing a niche at all?

I just finished a complete bathroom redo for a client. he went with this marble mosaic behind his sink, but he wanted a niche w/the same design, so we put a sheet on the back of the niche. shower tiles are 4x12, hand made look, in a gray blue.

We are trying to be budget friendly so was trying to look for an accent piece that was on the cheaper side per sheet. I did find some stunning ones but they were pretty expensive. So all i know for definite is we are using porcelain “carrara look a like” in 12x24 was planning to use for bathroom floor and shower with one wall being an accent wall. So you think i should go more grey & white cement piece as you showed above instead of the black & white?

well, you saw mine w/the carrara and black and white. you would have to bring in some other black. say, a black hex or something for the shower floor.

here's your choices w/black tile for shower floor and white subways for wall

bottom left, is a softer gray/white cement-look porcelain tile w/glazed gray brick in a herringbone.

Either works fine.

As for the other marble accent tile I posted, it's not that expensive. maybe 30 something per sheet? you could do backsplash behind your vanity, or scratch the black and white and do some in the shower.

you could also do the black and white on the floor and use your marble-look tile on the walls of your shower

black marble basketweave is beautiful too (I have this in my water closet)

this would look great w/your cement tile in the shower. to cut costs you could go w/plain white subways for the other walls. This marble tile isn't that expensive. I got mine straight from china so each sheet was only $5! I think you can find them for under 15 a sheet. they also make them in a white porcelain w/black dots.

I love these designs. you could use your black/white in the shower or floor. more than one way to do layouts. the bathroom isn't that big. look for deals on tile. save money elsewhere on lighting or do your own demo.

Tilebar has this porcelain w/metal insert tile for $35 a sheet. (flat rate shipping at $10 though. good deal) They have similar one w/real marble and gold for a few bucks more.

you could use this w/your other marble-like tile

they do have this porcelain on their sale page for 3.71. It's a matte finish, so you could use it for the shower floor. maybe use smaller tiles for the middle portion of the floor w/this larger tile as border (or they have 2x2's)

(you could do your floor in the herringbone, or do the walls in the shower in a herringbone and the black/white put outside)

24x24 quartz tiles (top left) in gray or black (they also have white).

Wow thanks so much for all that inspo! Im thinking i will use my 12x24 for the bathroom floor... black & white for back wall in shower, white subway with dark grout(maybe?) for the other walls... and a black or white vanity with gold accents? Sound okay?

sounds good to me. (if you click on my name you can see better pics of the master bath. i also did a black vanity w/gold and black)

you may want to use a walnut vanity (wood always grounds black/white and gray)

this is a recent remodel I did for someone. this is a porcelain herringbone tile on the shower floor, and a charcoal color quartz for the curb)

white vanity with quartz countertop (leftover from their kitchen) and a marble backsplash with LED mirror

Not quite done yet. need to paint, finish trim work, and add another wood shelf to the niche. Consider doing a wall mount faucet. give you a little extra counter space and is easier to keep clean

as for the grout, don't use a dark w/the white subway. (not in the shower anyway) . dark grout will always take on a haze where it gets wet the most. (hard water issues). just do a neutral, light-medium gray shade. I think we did Pewter w/this dark tile.

Looks beautiful! Oh okay no dark grout? I'll check for a pewter shade. What size subway do you recommend for the shower walls?

@beth looking through your master bath photos - what countertop did you use? Is that marble? It's gorgeous. Looking for something similar to that for my kitchen.

I think the black works better w/your other tile, but the other is nice too. If it's porcelain, you can use the smaller one for the shower floor.

my countertop is Super White. it's a dolomite. has held up great. no etching or staining.

mine are 4x12. You could go larger,,,they have some solid white at 8x16 on tilebar. doing a 3x6 just means more grout lines.

this one I just finished for a client was also 4x12, but had a hand-made, wavy look to them

1x4 herringbone mosaic was done on the inside floor.

tiles on the outer floor are 12x24. this is a small bathroom

@beth thanks for all the help. Now im torn between vanitys. The one i originally had is off white (but its pretty white) and was thinking maybe do a black countertop & either gold fixtures or black fixtures? What color fixtures would you do in this bathroom?

Or should i get rid of the off white vanity w/ fear it will clash with my white floor & buy something like this

yeh_yeh, yes, they are made by Ceramica CRM324, 3x12 (comes in 6 colors) . You should be able to see them at any decent tile store.
