I think if you just move the sofas further apart from one another you will solve the problem. Adding a sofa table is going to look a bit strange since you already have a console up against the opposite wall. And some empty space is necessary as it looks like that is a walkway. You want an approximately 4' walkway between the back of the sofa and the console. You could actually move the console behind the sofa and leave the wall unadorned.

Thank you, Diana. What if I add a sofa table and remove the console? Thinking the console looks tiny. It use to be in our small entryway in a previous home and we dont have an entry way here.

Sure, that's a good idea. I can't tell from the photo any of the dimensions, and if you think the console is too small, then removing it and getting a new sofa table in a length that works with the sofa is a good approach. You could also place lamps on the sofa table, and add 2 small X-benches underneath.

I wouldn't move the sofas apart if they are a comfortable distance for conversation and moving in and out. Since it looks like this area does double duty as a play area, how about a sofa table sized cabinet with some closed door toy storage underneath?

The console table against the wall may look too tall but may be worth trying it there to see what one looks like. If a sofa table looks good there perhaps some sort of bench would look good where the console currently is? I agree about pulling sofas apart a bit. They do look a little tight to me. Are they at least 18” away from the coffee table edge? To me the rug looks more under the left sofa than the right one so it appears the rug and sofa can be moved further apart to the left.

Larger rug then open that space by moving into the too large open space. How about some color...like in a brighter patterned rug?

Thank you for suggestions. The sofas are 20 in and 22 in apart ffrom the coffee table. I feel if i move them apart any further, it will feel too open and strange.

There are two end tables behind one of the sofa. Im trying to sell them so I cant move the other sofa until i get rid of it.

The sitting area space is quite narrow to walk through if someone is already sitting, so I think they could be further apart. Also you could add an open, narrow, sofa table behind the sofa, even though you have a console on the opposing wall. It would help join the area together.

That is definitely far apart enough from that coffee table and I take it you want it centered on the fireplace as well. I still say it may be worth trying a sofa table behind the sofa when you can and then a bench where the current console is. By the way, you have a beautiful room!

Yes, wmsimsons85, I want my fireplace centered. I like your suggestion of a sofa table and a bench. But we already have settee against another wall. Would a bench look too redundant?

Also, I have a 4 year old who liked to bring his toys to play here and his idea of putting them away is stacking them behind the sofa. So like partim said, maybe a cabinet type for my son's toys to be put in.

I added some pictures with the sofa about 26 in from the coffee table and my son standing there as an reference.

I would add the sofa table and redo the opposing area. I really do not like looking at the back of a sofa in the middle of a room when you first walk into it.

Coffee tables should be no further than 18" from the seats in order to be useful. At 26" you've made the coffee table a no-man's-land. IMO, you should put the console where you have the settee, and flank it with your two slipper chairs. Get a bigger square coffee table and a much larger rug so that both of the leggy sofas can sit entirely on it and still be no more than 18" from it. I think the settee looks lost and uncomfortable in this room. Have you tried it in your foyer?

The problem is my foyer is an open area which doesnt allow for anything to be placed. My husband uses the bench for his shoes and we use it when we have big gatherings.

I initially had two chairs there and was planning tto put something in the middle of them. it bothered my husband alot. He felt very strongly that it disrupted the flow so I got he settee instead.

I can always relocate the settee to another part of the house.

Groveraxle, that was the plan initially. I have two cabinets next to my fireplace and it was hard to acess the cabinets with the sofas so close to it.

Also two arm chairs were making the walkway to my kitchen very narrow.
