Beautiful rose. Do you have black spot pressure? How is she health wise ?

Wow she's so pretty there! I have a yr old own root and just got a bare root from Austin. I love the fragrance too. It is so unique. I think she is one of the girliest roses!

Sultry, you're right, she is a girly rose, including the soft way this rose drapes. No thick, unwieldy canes on this little beauty.

dianela, we normally don't worry about black spot in the Bay Area because we don't have a lot of rain. This year, we have more rain than normal so some black spots show up but nothing serious. I just removed the black spot leaves when I saw them. While other roses have black spots, Strawberry Hill have none. Its health is rated excellent in my garden.

Sultry, mine is grafted on Dr Huey and 4 year old. Most grafted DAs perform wonderful in my garden. I agree that she looks very girly :) I got her for her big blooms and her vase life. However, when I put her in a spot that some other tree roses struggled and she just thrives. She's very healthy, repeats well, has good vase life, smells great and has hood vase life. Next to her is Abraham Darby and it's struggling with rust, but I like AB blooms so I will keep it and just give it more care and love.

Lisa, I let it does whatever it likes because I was behind on my training task but since it looks fine the way it is so I just leave it alone.

Jo, I saw the pics of your garden you shared in another thread and love them. Another star in my garden is Olivia Rose Austin. Here is its pic.

So beautiful, Helen! It’s amazing how graceful SH looks doing her own thing. How do SH blooms hold up in the heat? Olivia looks so great, too!

Dave, we have mild weather around 70-85. Once in a while the temperature goes up to 95-100 but the water from the bay cools it down a few days later. Through all of those temperatures, SH blooms are doing well for an Austin rose. Helen

Helen - you certainly know how to enable. Do tell me more about this other star in your garden - Olivia Rose Austin. Dare I hope that she remains compact, or if not, at least is narrow? How is rebloom?

Do you grow Queen of Sweden? I saw it this weekend and the blooms were lovely.

Jo, LOL. Blame it on the photogenic of DA roses. Olivia Rose Austin is about 3 ft wide x 4 ft height and repeats well. It doesn’t have strong fragrance like other DAs but fragrance is a relative thing. Recently I made a small bouquet. There were only 3 Golden Celebration blooms but the fragrance was so strong that I kept the vase a bit further away from my desk :) From that experience, if I make a bouquet for a small room, I will select roses that have light or gentle fragrances so they don’t overwhelm a small room.

I have Queen of Sweden, but the blooms don’t last long so I often don’t cut them. I grow Jude and Queen of Sweden just because they look pretty in the garden. Helen

Yours is gorgeous! Love the colour & form of your rose. It's nice to see a larger version of this rose. I have this rose, obviously is not as large in my zone.

For those wondering about black spot, it is a very healthy Austin in my garden. The foliage of this rose is very glossy and thick. It holds up well for disease resistance. Is also showing decent cold hardiness in the last 2 winters.

The color is quite unique. How big are the blooms?

Suebelle, the great things about this forum is we don't have to grow all the roses we like in our gardens because we can always enjoy the roses we don't have rooms for from our forum friends' gardens :)

Hello! I was wondering how you think Strawberry Hill and Olivia Rose would look together in the same garden bed since you have both? I have a SH growing in a fence and want to plant some Olivia’s in front. Do you think their pinks would look good together? Thanks!

jayferg, I think it will look nice together. The pics above show the roses' colors in real life so you can put the pics next to each other and see if you like the combo. If you do, then go for it :) Helen

I think they should be ok together. I’m trying to stick to DA’s that have a history of doing well with our summers. It’s so hard because I want them all! Olivia definitely gets recommended a lot for our area. I can’t wait until my Strawberry Hill gets bigger like yours. It is doing very well in my yard after just being planted this year.

They will look great when they mature in your garden. Please share the pics when they bloom. Helen

Thanks for your gorgeous photos, Helen. I made an impulse purchase on Saturday, and looked for something to make me feel better about the choice, and found your posts. Now I'm excited! Unfortunately, I didn't have any space for SH, so had to put her in a half barrel next to Cl. Butterscotch. Not sure how that will work, but thankfully I've not got either in the ground, so I can move them (with great difficulty) at some point in the future!

I've had my SH for nearly a year and no blooms. I have her trained up an obelisk.

Bayarea_girl: Is your SH in full sun? does she require a lot of water and food? I'm in SoCal and mine is in full sun.

Haku, yes, mine is in full sun and grafted on Dr Huey. From my experience , if you give roses in California enough water, they will bloom more, else they will be in survival mode and don’t bloom as much. Helen
