Painting Knotty Pine

Hi there,

We have a dark knotty pine ceiling in our kitchen. We are renovating the kitchen and would like to paint the ceiling white.

I understand a primer like Zinniser BIN is best used on the knots. My dilemma is that my two young children have bad asthma and I’m worried that the smell will linger and cause respiratory problems (we’ll have them out of the house while work is happening of course).

My question: has anyone used a water based primer on knots with any success? I’ve used kilz and have had bleed through on a wall before so I’m. It inclined to try that again.

Any thoughts or ideas? At this point, we may just use a water based and deal with the bleed through, but I’d hate to waste the money.

Thanks for any thoughts or ideas!
