Is there any reason to assume they are pests? Is anything being damaged?

Your insect looks unlike a mosquito but very much like a gnat. Do you see these crawling around on damp soil, or are they only on the wing in clusters?

I just see them flying around in my garden. There's a lot of them though.

They'll probably be gone next week...the question is whether or not they'll lay eggs in your veggies first. :)

Chris, fungus gnats are extremely common in a healthy soil system. There are more this year due to the rainy conditions, but things should balance out before long.

I sure wouldn't treat them as a pest in the big outdoors.
