Speakers are very subjective, but check out the zreviews channel on youtube. He’s a bit crude, but he’s never steered me wrong. Look at the Swan M300’s he just reviewed.

You might want to take a look at the Sonos Playbase which was rated very good for TV and music by Consumer Reports. CNET and PC Mag also like it. Be sure to read the CNET article for information about placement i.e., "Be aware that the speaker will need unfettered access to bare walls to give the wide soundfield".

I recently purchased a 55" flatscreen and, knowing I wouldn't like the built-in speakers, got an inexpensive soundbar for $119 (I think), both from Costco. The sound bar sounds much better than I expected. I plan to eventually upgrade, but now it's the main speaker system for the room where the TV is located. I connected my Bluray player to it and CDs, DVDs and Bluray discs all sound good with this system.

I suggest you to take a look at Pioneer. I've had Sony, Technics and now Pioneer. 100% satisfied. They might be slightly more costly than the others but absolutely worth it.
