That's the little part of the stem that is coming out of the roots in the ground that's all that I have left of it I hope it's not killed forever I feel so bad

It could certainly reappear next year.....or even later this season. But you are not doing the vine any favors by allowing grasses and weeds to overwhelm the planting site!! Clear all those away, apply some alfalfa meal, mulch to keep the weeds away and keep your fingers crossed.

They don't die from a broken stem. That clematis needs to be pruned in late winter or early spring.. Clean the weeds around it, have some mulch over the roots since they need shade and humidity and it will be ok

Actually I just cleared it the other day... the picture just makes it appear worse than it really is.. but thanks for the information..

Clematis are pretty resilient. I have several, from different groups and all made it through broken stems, late frost, too much water, etc. My mother-in-law has a really beautiful one that she thought she lost because of an outdoor renovation (the contractors covered everything with tarp and weren't very careful with the plants)..that year the clematis seemed to have disappeared, but the next Spring it came back. This year is already full of flowers..so many that the rose next to it is barely visible.

Mulch won’t get rid of the grass. Pull the grass out and then put down alfalfa meal which has plant hormones that stimulate plant growth, and then mulch as suggested above.
