Carpenter bee?

Late last Summer, I saw this bee for the first time. Only one as far as I can tell. Today there were 7 at a time on a small patch of coreopsis, so I thought I look them up. The only images that looked like it were of western carpenter bee. This can’t be right.
They are at least bees, right?
