Marie Louise Jensen is beautiful but I don’t think that’s a match. Your pic seems to show 8 petals and a maroonish stripe on the petals. The one I have is just purple and my pic is a good representation of the color.

I guess I should’ve counted the petals LOL. No maroonish stripe, it’s just the way the light is hitting it. Very close though!

After looking at those you suggested, gardengal. I am leaning strongly towards Rhapsody. The petal shape, color and size are very similar.

and frankly... when thinking huge mass production.. and big box.. i wouldnt be searching exotic newer named plants.. to find an ID ...

Too early in the season for jackmanii to be blooming. That is a late flowering LFH, typically flowering in midsummer through until frost.

H F Young. I have one that I bought bare root at lowes a couple of years back. I have seen the same 3-4 clematis available at all big box stores, whether as bare root or in gallon pots with a generic tag. HF young is among those. It is beautiful one, blooms throughout the year, even in winter (I take it indoors before frost).

Looks like my clematis The President, which I got at a big box store last year, and is blooming now too.

The President has pinkish red stamens and filaments rather than the cream ones in this photo.

Per garden gal's excellent observation about bloom time, when did you buy it? If you just bought it this year then the bloom time could be very off since they time things to sell and not with Mother Nature. If you bought it last year, per GG's comment it could be a different cultivar. (On this same note, I was peeved to buy Clara Curtis mums a month ago...in Maine...and see them full of buds. Come on, people. I know it needs to sell, but do we have to trick things into blooming that far off the calendar? Nicely mentioned it to one of the owners, but i understand his dilemma.)

Notice that HF Young is a bit lighter than the original and has petals that overlap unlike the gaps between petals of the original. As GG48 said well upthread, there are many, many similar clematis that may have somewhat different growth patterns, and though sometimes there are distinct enough flowers to be fairly sure of the ID, others are far less easy to ID, in particular the various shades of blue and purple are difficult. Also, IME labels at big box store are fairly often incorrect, even when they have labels.

As others have suggested, wait until it has been in the ground a couple of years in order to determine when the bloom period is and then base the pruning style on period of bloom. In my garden, if it blooms when the other type 2s bloom, with or before the Siberian iris in late spring, it gets a light pruning right after bloom, type 2. (Obviously that bloom time would be earlier in your garden.) Otherwise it gets hard pruned in winter or very early spring before full leaf out, type 3.
