Saw this news earlier this week. Unfortunate. I wonder what went wrong considering they were such a great company.

Wow! Usually something like this happens right after I specify the company's product.

I think we will see a bit more bankruptcies like that ...

1) Massive influx of RTA cabinets (IKEA and chinese ans some us brands), that getting better and better. Even at the high end builders considering 6k IKEA or 60k wood-mode. Consumers debating just spending 10k and placing nicer handles and trim.

2) Shaker style cabinets (not very complicated door has been bane of the industry)

3) Overall reduction in number of kitchen cabinets and use of pantries with inexpensive shelving.

4) Common hardware. Every single manufacture now offers soft close... While not all hardware is the same consumers pretty much ask for softclose.

Interesting that the industry has not been onboard with the Shaker cabinet style and unable to change the fashion on their own.

As for the costs, IKEA makes a very compelling product.

Surely some of the companies in this category will survive? Plan & Fancy, Crown Point, Rutt, et al.

With wooden cabinets becoming more popular, quality will matter much more, right?

PS When I see how much money kitchens cabinets cost for people who like in areas where median home prices are under 500K, I have to wonder how these companies sell much outside of HCOL areas. I could never fathom spending 20 percent of my house's value on a kitchen redo.

Rita, isn't it just like with most things in life ... you can get a car for $18k or $180K. Maybe Kia vs top end Mercedes or Land Rover. You can buy a watch for $100 or $20K, say Seiko vs Rolex. Kitchen cabinets are no different.

We all splurge or find value in different things. I don't spend money on designer clothes, shoes or purses, but I wanted great quality kitchen cabinets after having lived with crappy ones. The real estate price in my area support the higher end cabinets.

We are moving next year to a lower COL area and I'll probably need to do a new kitchen and I wasn't going to do WM again there, because I would never get that back in resale. I might have looked at their Brookhaven line though.

In the meantime Christopher Peacock has 10 showrooms of his own. It's the continued bifurcation of the American market. Super high end seems to be thriving.

You know, I had never heard of Wood-Mode before my Sales Rep. told me they shut their doors a few weeks ago, and their dealers were contacting Conestoga Wood Specialties to see if they could produce cabinets and doors to Wood-Mode spec's. I am sure Conestoga can, as they make a lot of the components, for a lot of the different cabinet manufacturers, but I would think it would take months to set this all up, and that won't help Wood-Mode customers with partially finished kitchens :( That all being said, I am one of the few Authorized Conestoga cabinet re-sellers, and would be happy to provide any Wood-Mode customers with a competitive kitchen quote. Conestoga cabinets can be ordered and delivered in less than 4-weeks. No upcharge for custom sizing. Like I mentioned, I am not sure what kind of quality Wood-Mode cabinets are, but I do know that Conestoga's cabinets are the best I have ever seen.
