Black Stems on Azaleas and Rhododendron

Hello,

I'm new to gardening and recently purchased a home with established azaleas and rhododendrons about a year ago. I recently noticed that some of the stems are dark black, almost powdery looking on some of plants, really noticeable on some of the rhodedendrons. The plants look healthy otherwise and the azaleas flowered beautifully this Spring. The rhodies have large buds that will most likely bloom early next month. I am in Zone 6A. I will post a picture soon, but any idea what this could be? We have had a lot of rain recently.
