Hiya!

I decided that Betty Corning was likely to look washed out with the others, so right now I'm planning Duchess of Albany with Lady Betty for that tree, and a montana in another tree. Right now Betty Corning is slated to be planted with a Rosa New Dawn on a long fence.

And these are old Eastern red cedars, Juniperus virginiana, something like 30 feet tall. You're right, the term can be confusing!

Oh, and P.S. -- I have very rocky ground, so I'm planning to do these guys in pseudo-raised beds. I'll start them in fake whiskey barrels just outside the dripline, but with large "drain" holes in the bottoms of the barrels so the roots can work their way through into the actual ground. I do nearly all my gardening here in containers, including all my clems!

The combo of Betty Corning and New Dawn roses should give you a long bloom time between the two. Here ND blooms earlier and then BC blooms closer to midsummer.

Then make sure it is a BIG tree :-) Here is a photo of a montana growing up a tree in a garden close to me I took last spring.

Here is one of the cedars in question -- a photo I took a couple of years ago. I think sometimes people don't realize that the Eastern cedars can get quite large, given time; we usually only see the youngsters popping up in fields and so on.

Don’t dismiss the possibility that a conifer might suffer if it’s foliage/needles are coved by a dense vine throughout The growing season. I saw the dead brown branches of several smaller confers that served as clema‘tis supports.

i don’t think the tree’s size matters; it is difiguring and branches may not regrow. Do what you like but be attentive to your trees
