How can I identify the variety...(pic in comments)

2 years ago I ordered 2 bare root peonies that were supposed to be Sarah Bernhardt variety. Light pink, fluffy, big cups, etc. The order confirmation said Sarah Bernhardt. The package said Sarah Bernhardt and I was prepared to wait 2-3 years for blooms. Imagine my shock when I got buds this spring and they were dark.Well, yesterday they opened up and I was sent Karl Rosenfeld peonies. The flower is beautiful, don't get me wrong, but it's not at all what I wanted. I ordered more for fall shipment, but is there a way to tell what variety they are just from the bare root they send?

Who did you order from? Some are better at sending what is ordered. You should at least attempt to contact the seller. However since you ordered two years ago it is unlikely that the seller will do anything.

Probably not what this poster has done but things like this is why when I see people suggesting you remove first year flowers/buds I cringe. The seller left a bloom size bud on the root so that when it bloomed the following spring the buyer will know that they received the correct plant. If you cut it off you may have to wait several years for the next bloom. Some sellers to be nice might give you a small credit but many will not. There are some purchasers of various plants that always receive the wrong plants, I know one.

Maifleur, iI ordered from Bluestone Perennials. I ordered more for the fall, but iI did contact them to let them know iI didntdidn't get what I ordered 2 years ago. Now that they are open, I am thinking about canceling the order just because I won't truly know for 2 years if it is right or another mistake.

A worthy seller would replace the roots at no charge.

I spoke with the company and they are refunding me and sending me two new roots. They have a supplier and made them aware of the mistake.

I'm just nervous because if there is no way to tell from the root, I'll be waiting another two years to see what they are.

That is the major disadvantage of buying bare root. But the same thing happens when you buy the plant. If you buy from a reputable seller (Adelman's, Solaris for example) the roots will be correct. But even they occasionally make mistakes. Always keep your receipts. The big growers usually send big enough bare roots that often they bloom in the first spring. Good luck.

Gray-I will check out Adelman's! Thank you!

At the end of the season, right after Thanksgiving, Adelman's has a clearance sale with some really nice roots at low prices. The day after Thanksgiving.

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to come back and update. Bluestone ended up refunding me for the two original wrong plants and the ones I ordered again last year. In the fall of 2019 they contacted me and said they had a problem with their supplier and had to cancel all orders. So that's it for them. It was already too late to order from Adelman's in October 2019 so I just placed an order today for fall 2020. I hope I get the right ones this time. This has been quite the adventure!

No independent garden center displaying potted peonies in season or peony specialist - there are some of these latter scattered around, for instance there is one even in my part of conifer country - in your area you can drive to, select stock in flower?
