The 'Vulcan' at the top is sporting, quite a common thing with members of the Hyacinthina family. 'Vulcan' is out of 'Captain Kirk' which is out of 'Gold Standard' which is out of 'Fortunei Hyacinthina', still with me...

I have green sports out of 'Revolution' which I call 'Green Revolution' and out of 'Risky Business' which I call 'Outta Business' and they sure remind me of what you're seeing happening with that one 'Vulcan'. For garden ID purposes you can call it whatever you want, like 'Green Girl' for example if you wanted to maintain a Star Trek theme...

Well, Sydney, I’m betting you will get different answers here. Last season I had two hosta sport, Stained Glass and Miniskirt. I carefully separated the Miniskirt and repotted both pieces. The sport died in about six weeks and the Miniskirt didn’t bud out this spring, the crown died. Stained Glass got the same treatment. The sport died by September. I just dug and repotted Stained Glass a week ago, it was sooooo small, it actually looks better today. BTW, I have been successful with growing hosta in pots, Miniskirt was growing in a pot and Stained Glass was in my garden.

I know many have done this successfully but I’m not separating any more hosta. If this happens again here the hosta will be compost.

Van Wade once said (many years ago) that he just twisted off (to remove) the all green eyes rather than cutting them out. No trauma to the original pant. Your choice.

dig it up ... separate them ... replant good one.. throw away the green one ... unless you insist on keeping it.. then all the power to ya ...

there is a big difference between a 4 foot across crown.. and needing a backhoe to dig it up ... so you twist them off ... as compared to this tiny thing ... of which i just spent more time typing than it would take to pop it out of the ground ... eh???
