The terminal growing point produces a hormone that keeps lower, dormant buds from breaking. Remove the growing tip removes the hormone and the dormant, subterminal buds begin to grow. If a plant has opposite leaves, it will have opposite dormant buds, so when you prune, you get two dormant buds breaking and forming two new shoots. (Remove one if you want just one shoot or to train the growth in the direction you want. If the leaves are opposite and you prune you get one but break.

I've been doing different prunings - for shaping and observing. Some I've left alone Others, I've pruned way low, leaving 2 buds on strong laterals. Some I've cut down the lateral off completely down to opposing buds of a thick stem

I wanted to get clarity in pruning and letting what -grows- for the season, what effect does it have on the overall growing habits or (energy) if we call it and how it affects the growth height of the main stem relative to what got pruned
