if its not living up to expectations.. i see no reason to put up with it ... be done with it ... lifes too short.. and i mean yours.. not the underperformer ...

Since the beetles eat the leaves, it isn’t able to store much energy. Start removing the beetle larvae and adults on a frequent basis and it may get more vigorous over the next year or two. Any replacement you make will do the same slide into stuntedness. I hold. Bucket of soapy water under and knock the beetles and larvae in.

I feed them once a month from the time they come up and through bloom. The ones in the pots I sprinkle some Osmocote fertilizer that feed them all summer.
