Is it okay to do a different tile in master bathroom?

I am doing white marble-look porcelain tile with wood-look tile throughout the house. The white tile is large format (47"x102") and the wood tile is 36"x8".

White tile will be in living room and kitchen on the floor. The wood tile will start at the hallway and go into the bedrooms.

I was planning on using the white marble-look tile in the master bath on the floors and walls and have some accent walls using the wood tile.

However, I'm also thinking of doing completely different tiles in the master bath...not sure if this is a design no-no. My thought was that since everywhere will be the same (white and wood), if I were to change the tiles it could feel like you're "transported" to a different place (spa) when in the bathroom.

Main goal is that the master bath will feel like a spa.

So, I'm stuck with a couple questions:

  1. If I keep the master bath with white and wood, do you think it will be too redundant?
  2. Would it be weird to have completely different tiles in the master bath?

Thank you

As functionthenlook wrote, it is completely normal to have a master bath look different than other areas of the house. Bathrooms (even guest baths) are typically viewed as discrete decor places - people have wood flooring but will use tile on bathroom floors for example.

What is typical is to tie master bathrooms into the decor of the master bedroom. I recently remodeled my entire condo. My master bath has wallpaper that is the same as the wallpaper I used in an accent wall in the bedroom. The fixtures are oil rubbed bronze as is the hardware on my bedroom door and bathroom door (hardware in my unit is oil rubbed bronze or copper). The tiles I selected tie in to color choices I used in my bedroom for furniture but didn't "match".

Really, there's no rule about matching between spaces that can't be seen at the same time, except insofar as switching from, say, traditional victorian to super modern would give a house a very jumbly eclectic feel. So make your bathroom the way you like! Have a little fun.

I have 5 bathrooms and they all have different tiles. The rest of the house is all hardwood floors. No rules, but I think the style/design needs to fit in with the rest of the house.

Do not use the wood-look tile on your walls!

@chispa - Why do you suggest not using wood-look tiles on the wall?

Because it looks bad and honestly I don’t like the mix of the huge format marble look and the wood tiles mixed in a small space. Those huge format tiles needa tile setter that has worked with them a lot they are a huge issue to lay properly and you better insist on seeing their work in real life before beginning .Also those huge tiles would not IMO would not work in a bathroom they are meant to be used in large spaces.. To answer your question your master bath and bedroom should be cohesive in design and that can be quite different from the rest of the house too.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting - I see large format tiles being used in the bathroom in magazines and online a lot. Why do you think they do not work?

Do you have pictures of the tile you are using? I definitely think you can mix it up in the master but would recommend you pick something that coordinates.

@Chrysalis Interiors - You will see the original wood and white tile I had. Then, I decided on using a large format tile for the living room and kitchen floors. And was also thinking about using it on the bathroom walls.

I'm also trying to decide on which large tile to choose. I'm thinking the top one because it is more white versus the yellowish/brown one on the bottom

I like your choices. I agree - I like the look of the top one as well. You could also pick out some hex or different shape tiles to add interest or even play with how you lay the tiles. Maybe a herringbone pattern in the shower or for the floor would add interest. I pulled some images that might inspire you. Hope that helps.

    Hi everybody,

peggysue_1975, I thought maybe this would be helpful - I work for a tile store that can create a rendering of the tile that you like in your own space. You will be able to see what it looks like in the space that you're buying it for. This is free - the idea is to solve this problem of being able to visualize what your space will actually look like with a certain product. If you're interested please feel free to email: info@tileestate.com. Cheers!
