How to create more seating?

We bought this 5 bedroom beach house that sleeps 12. We will be updating everything. How do We create more seating in the living room? Getting rid of the current furniture. We are open to floor, wall color etc ideas too. Thanks in advance for any advice!

This seams like a good sized room. I would do two facing sofas plus the love seat.

I would also do an upholstered coffee table w/ topper so that it can be used as seats when many people are over.

It's not a good sized room. It's only 17' x 12' in the area bounded by the backs of the couch & loveseat. And even then, the loveseat is crowding access to the door.

Two facing sofas (similar scale to the ones there now are 3+ feet deep each. That leaves 6 feet in which to put a coffee table and have room to walk, and that's with the one sofa jammed hard against the window wall. There's no room left for an upholstered coffee table suitable for seating.

Whatever you do should be scaled for a small room--nothing big and overstuffed. I don't see permanent seating for 12 in that space as it is. You may have to move the TV. If the space behind the loveseat is just for walking to the door, move the TV to that wall (if there is a wall there); that would free up some breathing room.

More pics would help. But better would be a scale drawing with measurements.

I wrestled with this problem myself. One of my favorite solutions was putting two small pouf/stools under a console table behind a sofa. The stools will stick out from the console a bit. The coffee table ottoman idea was a nonstarter for me. I like how it looks, but not how it functions. Plus I think it's best to have smaller coffee tables you can move around instead of one big one. That way you have flexibility when you want to pull a stool into the mix or drag a side chair over. I would put a bench against the wall with the window as well- maybe even a banquette. Remember as a rule only two people like to sit on a sofa at a time, so don't get something bigger thinking you are getting more seating capacity.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the ideas! Definitely some good suggestions and advice. I was going to add more photos but can’t figure out how to edit my post just yet. I will say behind the loveseat are the steps to the bedrooms. Lots of people going up and down in and out to the beach through the sliding door you see so a tv behind the loveseat won’t work.
I thought of putting decent bean bag type chairs on either side of the tv for kids as this is a beach rental.

Low and lean sofas. Minimal arms, bench seat or three seat. Take a look at the four ottomans in this pic....they are under the two coffee tables. I don't think I'd do beanbags, they take up too much room. Swivel barrels, maybe.

I would not want to be the person cleaning around bean bag chairs in a beach rental. Standard chairs are much easier to deal with.

We stayed at another property with this exact floor plan that had 2 swivel barrels in front of the window and they were the most popular seats. Thx for reminding me.

Forget beanbag chairs. Barbara's idea upthread is a good one. Add a bench seat with a cushion under the windows for extra seating. Bench seat doesn't need to be this involved but you get the idea. Float a long, low, well-proportioned sofa to face the TV wall and two upholstered chairs, up on legs facing the sofa. Two chairs will give you more flexibility than a sofa/loveseat which will interrup flow and not even seat more people.

For the TV wall, do something like this across the wall instead of just a TV plopped there on a skimpy stand.

Take into account your "fourth wall" which is your tile floor. You can see that the peach walls the current owner has just doesn't harmonize with that. Just start with white walls that work with the floor and get your beachy vibe in driftwood/sand colors for the sofa and some pale blues in art, pillows accent chairs. Put an oversized round coffee table with a pullout/nesting feature in the middle of the room to pull the gang together.

I would do a sectional that goes under the window and parallel to the door. This way, a pair of chairs can float across from the window and not block access to the LR. Choose a smaller scale sectional on the modern side - clean lines and not bulky arms. I like the round nesting coffee table suggestion.

The ottomans under coffee table Holly posted is nice looking, but it doesn't look like there is room to pull them out to actually use.

Looks like the table and chairs is a decent size, if 12 people are actually there and with 6 barstools. But barstools (and ottomans or benches) are not comfortable to sit on for any length of time. If you replace the table, maybe look at longer with people sitting on the sides but not the ends. Comfortable arm chairs that can be moved toward the LR area for visiting and watching TV.

Many thanks for the input. Leaning against a bench because not great for reading, relaxing, watching tv. I like the tv wall sample picture. Thx for beach vibe tips. That’s the vibe I want. We will be replacing the tile floor with Luxury Vinyl Planks. Are the gray tones still in style? A flooring person told me “vanillas” are taking over. Table is going too. I’ll look for a longer one.
