More Lucky Reds in the Seedling Bed

I'm on a lucky streak in the red part of the seedling bed.

Insider Trading X The Ultimate Sacrifice - A ruby red with just a bit of a cream edge dressing it up. It's perfectly round, and just under 6 inches in diameter. It's on 24 inch scapes at this point. The flower has heavy, rubbery substance, so I'm hoping that will help with sunfastness. It multiplies well, and I already have four fan. (Sorry I tore the petal in my excitement to help it open. I was dying to photograph it.)

Barbara Mandrell X Red Edition #1 - I get very excited about bicolors. Bloom is just under six inches. It's on 20-23 inch scapes at this point.

Here's the surprise seedling out of (Electric Mist X Bali Watercolor) x Michael Davisson. It's a big 10-inch UF with gold teeth and knobs. I would describe the color as a peach bronze. Anybody else have an idea what color the petal are? From across the garden, it appears dark peach.

Here are some older seedlings that had their ffo's in the past two days.

Alan Lane Agin X Cosmic Sensation - It's not doing as well in it's new place as it did in the old seedling bed that became too shady. The soil in that bed was so much richer. It had been the previous house owner's vegetable garden. It hasn't multiplied much since I moved it, and the bud count is actually lower than when it got only 5 hours of sun a day.

Dust Be Diamonds x Tuxedo Junction - This one's not doing as well as it did in the old seedling bed either.

Precious Candy X Twilight Illusion - This one got 18-23 buds the first three years in the old seedling bed. Now, in full sun, it gets 11-12. Weird. I have fans to introduce, but since I can no longer get those bud counts, I hesitate.

Sherry - The UF is a weird color, but it's distinctive and it has that cool edge. My near white is quite grown up. It's been around for five or six years, and I have at least a dozen fans. When it was in the shadier bed it had 20 buds at one time - now not so many.

Your red seedling is an obvious wow bloom! The others are very interesting, I like the bitone. Personally, I’m not crazy about the color in the UF. The White reminds me of Summer Gloves, which is superb here. Hope it has the same qualities when it grows up.

That red seedling is dynamite1 unlike sherry, I like the UF..almost a bronze with the yellow. hat is a very good size. How tall is it? I will be adding a yellow or red smack in the middle toward the front of my right front bed..I like the colors of this one...may eventually works out for that place..

Kay - Thanks for your comments. I'm glad someone likes the peach/bronze UF. Right now it's only 27 inches tall, but it has been a very dry growing season and it gets shaded out by UFs with taller, more vigorous foliage. I need to move it where it can get the spotlight. I would expect it to get taller since the parents had scape heights in the 30s. There's only two fans of it so far, so it will be awhile before that one travels out of Nashville.

Oh Debra , another gorgeous red........i just love the red seedling .......the UF appears to be the same sort of peachy color as a UF I grow here called Lily Dache. Definitely peachy color but not a polychrome in any way.

Heather - I looked up Lily Dache. The color is similar, but not exactly the same.

Beautiful red seedling, love the UF, I have always liked those. I really like the Precious Candy seedling, isn't it odd that it was doing better in shade?

Nancy - When the Precious Candy seedling had those high bud counts that seedling bed was not shaded so much. Bud counts went down there each year as the neighbor's many trees grew taller and wider. The soil there is much richer than where I have moved the seedlings, which is heavy clay. Also, the soil in the old seedling bed didn't seem to dry out as fast as the two beds where I now have the Precious Candy seedlings. I thought once I got those seedlings in the sun again, the bud counts would go up. But it's been two years and I haven't seen any of them regain their bud counts. Perhaps they lost their vigor with so many years in the shade.

This is so funny. I posted some of these photos on my Facebook site, and I've already had two people ask to buy the first red one. On Facebook people don't read, they just look at pictures. They don't realize it's just a seedling at this point.

Debra, you have to admit that that is a wonderful testimonial to your seedling . The people like the face and sometimes it doesn't matter if it has 50 or 15 or 5 buds . The face of the plant is what sells it and the face on your new red seedling which appears to be a lovely clear true red is obviously gonna be a winner ! How wonderful !

Heather - It's so true that it's the face of the plant that sells it. The seedling face did it for me. I love it more than any registered red I grow.
