Planting deeply - 4-6 inches lower than the container level - and pruning back hard the first couple of seasons should help generate additional stems. Alfalfa meal is also a great amendment for clems as it contains a natural plant growth hormone - triacontanol - that encourages basal stemming.

Gardengal, what time of year should the hard pruning be done?

Many say the first hard pruning should be done as soon as planted. But that's a bit severe for most gardeners, even more so if the vine is budded or blooming :-) Late winter, when any other established clematis are pruned, is fine. Or in fall if you prefer that timing.
