You have a beautiful room. Why do you have your chair far away from the conversational area? You can probably place a console on that wall. For a window like that I would use a ceiling rod.

The chair is there as they put an alcove next to the entry and by the fireplace. The chair filled in that area perfectly without blocking the enry to the room.

I love the new floor choice. the swags are what dates the room the most. Replace with panels that are fully functioning stacked so you get the most natural light possible when open. Keep the sheers if you want but hem them.... no puddling. If your furniture is in decent shape I would continue to use it excpet the coffee table that also dates the room. Maybe look for an upholstered ottoman that would coordinate with your furniture instead, it could be a patterned one. And bring in more pattern with pillows. Personal touches are what makes a house a home. If you like the picture and the upholstery is good on your fathers chair, keep them. Can you give us more pictures of the room in relation to everything around it? Stand in every corner taking a picture of the opposite corner. If it's open to the dining and the stairs include those in the pictures. If you can see them this room has to fit with them as well. Designwise and color. If the tree is real keep it but fake plants kill a room. They do not add anything. You have great lighting and plants would thrive and be a great addition if you want that life in the room. I would start with removing the valances and the rest of the window treatments which will give you an entire new perspective. If you want a little privacy and filtered sunlight, sheers would do well. Lots of accessories and candles make the space look dated as well, because they appear to have been popular years ago. Remove them, but the Kincade is something you like, so you should keep it. I would move the wing chair closer to the sofa with the idea that a guest sitting there would have a more conversant connection with anyone sitting on the sofas. It seems to be too far away. Definitely get rid of the tree and replace it with a real floor plant. I think if you simplify and pare down the accessories, you will see the room differently. Do it for yourself and not for what other people think!

I would do pattern drapes even if you end up placing a rug in the room also you don’t have to block the entrance just move the chair up from where it stands. With the ceiling curtains you can your ceilings to appear a lot higher.

I have a black thumb so real plants always die on me. If I remove the plant what do I put in that space? The table between the 2 couches in the corner is rectangular with drawers and is cherry wood. If we switch the coffee table, do we switch this one? Can you upload images of coffee tables? Corner table images if that should be replace? What things do people put on mantles these days?

Doesn’t seem like your plant is dying it is as healthy as it looks unless you prefer to place it with a faux fig tree or maybe a birds of paradise.

Do you love your traditional things? I think this room is lovely other than the window treatment. I would suggest removing them and living with the bare windows for a bit. Add back only what you love, if anything. Recover the chair that reminds you of your father. Do what you love and makes it feel like home to you. I really detest the word outdated.

Since the ceiling is sloped mounting any kind or drapery there wouldn't work. If hemmed even to close, when open they would be hanging on the floor on one side and angled up on the other. Floor length mounted as your sheers are is the only option unless you are okay with taking them away completely. Remove the valances and see if you can live with or without drapes

I agree that removing the valances on the windows would be the first step to updating the room a bit. Keeping sheers on the windows that just touch the carpet and don't puddle as suggested will also help. There's no reason you can't mix wood side tables with a metal coffee table. Consider removing everything from the mantel except the candlesticks and then add the brass plate to the right. That would be all you need there.

If you want to try a live plant, a snake plant in a pretty planter on a stand would work. They thrive on neglect. I haven't watered mine in over a month and it's still doing fine.

These pillows would be beautiful on your loveseat and bring in a bit of the green I see on the marble table top by the chair.

Your room looks lovely and cozy and done. You should definitely not feel the need to change it just because a few vocal people tell you it's not their style. There's a real sense of needless consumerism on Houzz, unfortunately.

I agree with other commentors, if you're going to change anything maybe consider removing or modifying the drapes.

I think this is a really nice room. It's clean, light filled, comfortable looking and serene. As others have noted, the room would benefit from changing the window treatments. Consider corner rods for the curtains. I think it will give you a more streamlined look.

I was thinking maybe going neutral with your drapes then add more color to the room. Since you have burgundy chair you can throw in complimentary colors like either blue, green or orange
