we were sort of going by the handrails, so right now it's about 2.5ft" wide.. but after looking it over I would def make this area wider and then that will possibly give me the opportunity to some curves, not sure which direction yet though.

I was hoping for this to be a low maintenance garden as well, and don't want to add anything that will grow too big In that case I should probably add smaller types of evergreens

Yes, it needs to be much wider.

And take mowing into consideration when you plan the bed, too. I have a big riding mower, and even though it’s a zero-turn it can’t get into fussy little odd-shaped patches of grass. And I hate to drag out the trimmer.

Ah that's true, I would hate that too! I rather not make too much of an odd edge shape especially since sometimes my neighbors do us the favor and mow the lawn.. I suppose I can leave it either straight or add a slight curve :D

Take a day and go to Longwood to look at things. Take pictures of plants that take your fancy. Make sure to take a picture of the tag, so you know exactly what it is next month.

Consider going to you local gardens centers in Central PA . Ashcombes in Mechanicsburg PA and SKH in Mechanicsburg or Harrisburg will help with landscape design. You can also see the plants in their nursery. You may want to take these photos and measurements along. Also take a photo where they can see the entire house
