I think a black and white chevron print would look awesome for window panels.

The china cabinet looks to be crowded into the room. Will it not fit the dining room?

Drapes- are neutral and go with the colour palette.
Lamps- looks too small in relation to size of Sofa. Would suggest contemporary options like these


Mantle- hang the round mirror 6in off the mantle. IMO the other objects on it do not gel. Alternatives for your consideration.

I have chosen these curtains , for the lamps a floor lamp would probably be better .

Like the pillows above. I would consider removing the buffet to the left of the sofa and add an end table. It looks crowded in there. Agree the lamps could be larger. You could also consider a sofa table behind the sofa in front of the window with a large lamp and something textural or sculptural.

I like the draperies you have there and see no need to change them as you can add interest with your pillows.

It's difficult to see the arrangement above the fireplace but I would bring the two candlesticks together on one side and balance them on the other side with the close or the one jug along with a similar piece either larger or smaller and remove the red piece.

The sofa is lovely, good choice

In the model home merchandising industry, they use 3' tall lamps in the living rooms. The above photo showing a lamp behind the sofa is ideal for small spaces. I'd remove the drapes and use a window treatment that is very simple inside the frame of that window only. Check out Hunter Douglas styles This would make your room airier since it's a bit tight in there. Here's one that would let sunlight filter in.

I struggle most with the color of the curtains since its not quite the same as the wall color.

The curtains die on the vine. They do nothing for your space. Like the suggestions for curtains from ehoney. You need some pattern. Overall it is a lovely room!

I suggest removing the cabinet in the corner, or that is not possible, I would paint it! (either the wall or trim color to make it disappear into the room).

I agree with the suggestions for some patterned drapes. Whenever I've had bold patterned curtains (from Ikea they don't have to be expensive) I've received great compliments. I would get a pattern with black in it (like the white ones with black circles) to tie into the black from the fireplace area. Very important: from the pictures it looks like your curtain rod ends close to the window. I would extend the curtain rod to the two side walls. That way when they are open they can cover the wall and you will get maximum light from your window. If your rod isn't near the top of the wall (can't tell from the picture) consider raising it too. That will also emphasize the great ceiling height you have and will help keep the pattern from boxing in the room.

I would definitely remove the hutch from that space, it just too much furniture. Perhaps it can be repurposed in another room. I agree that a geometric bold pattern drapery floor to ceiling would make a dramatics backdrop, also the lamps need modern shades. Love the color of the pillow behind the other one, perhaps that's a color you could play on more. And when it comes to accessories, less is more. Larger better than too many small ones. It's a wonderful room, you should make the most of it!

Not seeing the full room makes it difficult, but I think I would rearrange. Move the china cabinet to the opposite wall next to the fireplace. One chair where the china cabinet currently is, one where the couch is, the left side would give more room to access the china cabinet. Couch goes where the chairs are, letting you stretch out to look out the window and enjoy the fireplace at the same time. People will use the couch more often, so why not let them enjoy the view?

I love these ideas and I'm definitely going to use many of them. I appreciate everyone's creativity. Hutch is definitely going - its on that long, long list of To Do's ;)

The idea of rearranging the furniture is intriguing. It would be interesting to see the placement of the sofa and chairs flipped, providing you have enough depth for the sofa. I see a door behind the chairs so you may not have room but it's worth a try. And if you're thinking of patterned drapes, the chairs in the window area would allow full view of the drapes and the drapes would frame the chairs nicely. A table in between the chairs and a modern lamp as suggested by others might look great and really open up the room. If you try it upload pics for us!

I would reverse the sofa with the two chairs by the window, that might give the hutch some room (if it must stay) and you could possibly put a more modern standing glass table/lamp combo between the chairs. Also you may want to edit your mantel by using your candelsticks on one side, the clock on the other and eliminate the two jars. Another version......use your mirror on a side wall and hang a large painting over the mantel. You have a beautiful start on your room. I totally luv your chairs......great wall color.

I would like to see the focal point in the room if you could take a pic of the fireplace. I did notice a nice mirror but it would be nice to see a big real painting above the fireplace.

I like what you have so far and all the advise you have received are spot on. My only input is there any artwork/photos in the room? Even the wall near the window and fireplace opposing the dining hutch could do with a little something.

Everything looks great with the exception of the fringed lamp. Something more in keeping with the rest of the room

I would suggest you angle the chairs slightly. It will give more space at entry and soften the look.

Great suggestions about drapes, furniture placement and lamps. I can't tell exactly what flooring you have, but to tie into the fireplace screen and add some visual contrast and depth, this rug (very affordable) may give some pop to your living room. Or, the flokati may add texture and interest. Great job so far!

When you move the cabinet out, get an end table that matches your coffee table and put it at that end of the couch with a lamp on it. That little brown table with the magazines on it (by the fireplace) could go between your two chairs for guests to set their coffee on. A little less on the fireplace mantel...maybe just the mirror in the center and candlesticks on the sides....pulled in toward the mirror...maybe 8 inches or so. You need more lamps....maybe a tourchiere in the corner or a floor lamp between your chairs (with the little brown table) You room is nice.

What color is that on the walls?

The couch and the hutch feel heavy for the space. I would think a sofa or loveseat with legs would let more light into the room and make if feel brighter and larger. Also, I would paint the hutch or remove it altogether.

Hmmm, I think your room looks fab, but, I would change that fringed lamp. Also I would change what you have on mantle. Something a bit more metallic or pearlescent.

Have you considered placing the couch at an angle where the hutch (was) and window wall meet? It does not need to be at a 45 degree or even centered. Move one blue chair between the angled couch and the fireplace. Play with it, it should open up the space and make it more inviting.

At a quick glance, I don't think anyone has questioned the window dressings with respect to their dimensions. Having them set high and falling long will make the room feel narrow & raise the ceiling, if you want to add width to the room, consider drapes that retract right into each of the corners and pick something that doesn't look bulky when open (i.e. they pull back as tight to the wall as possible).

You could also consider a roller-blind or roman blind as these can assist with that horizontal focus instead of vertical). I would also move that lamp (and perhaps just change the shade to a style that matches the room better) into a corner or another side of the room as where it is currently positioned draws the eye in, effectively narrowing the room.

Try adding some colour, either a pair of bright cushions or some artwork. Use the cushions to add a pattern or texture as the couch is plain, and when / if you tire of them, they are inexpensive to update.

I also agree with the china cabinet sentiments. It's too big for the space.

Looks like a lovely room. Is that your front door behind the arm chairs? If so, could you swap arm chairs with sofa? Then put a narrow sofa table behind the sofa? Somewhere for post etc with a lamp or two on? What are the capiz lights like?

You've done an amazing job. Just a couple of tweeks to suggest.

Move clock on mantel in toward the middle just a few inches.

Move one candlestick holder to another location -- bedroom, bath, etc. Replace with a shorter candlestick.

Change the pillows with the big buttons to something more inspiring.

Art could really make your place pop.

Agree to hang mirror above mantel 5 or 6" up. Also agree that china cabinet looks cramped on the wall and the curtains look cramped by the cabinet.

Without seeing what is behind the chairs, I wonder if you could you move the sofa to the wall that has the china cabinet, move the two chairs in front of the window with a table between them? Without knowing the width of the room, it is difficult to know if the sofa would be too close to the fireplace. This arrangement might open up the space nicely.

Another thought after having another look at your photos, I think a larger mirror might work better hanging over the fireplace and I'm thinking the candlestick looks 'country' while your room looks lovely and traditional.
