I've been cleaning up the backyard of our rental where the departed tenant left a lot of potted plants. I emptied the contents of the pots holding dead plants and see that there are spheres that appear to be red clay, about 1/2" in diameter. What is the purpose of these? To promote drainage, retain water, or . . .?
