Not a hydrangea....but perhaps a viburnum? Hydrangeas never produce flowers in the leaf axils.....only at the terminal ends of stems/branches.

I am just not as familair with all the east coast viburnum species so can't say with any certainty which but perhaps V. dentatum or recognitum.

Some stuff is just now blooming late here. A limelight I believe, in maybe more shade is just making brocolli. It is newish. Our weather has gone crazy. However I do agree with gardengal, about the leaf axels. It is blooming along them. I sure wish I knew what it was. It's flowers do look fuzzyish? However what ever it is is cute! I wish I knew what it was.

Luis I can post more pictures later. I do think you are both right about it not being a hydrangea. The leafs reminded me of a oakleaf hydrangea, and I saw the brocolli. So I thought hydrangea. But since it's opened, bloom is so wrong. Wish I knew what it was! Love finding hidden treasures on this property. Not the first I have found!

Probably Beauty Berry (Callicarpa species or hybrid). I notice the ones in the state park's woods are starting to bloom in the Atlanta area.

Thats what it is Thank you!

Is it the same as elderberry?

No, not the same. Elderberry (Sambucus) blooms in May, gets quite large, and has edible (at least you can use the berries to make jelly/wine). Elderberry also has many ornamental cultivars grown for the leaves and color. The scent of elderberries reminds me of vanilla when in bloom.

Max is about 80 pounds in this photo. The clusters of berries are bending the branches to the ground.

You will have a few thousand seedlings later on so hoe them down before they get too big.

Black Lace is grown for the dark leaves.

and the golden one is quite ornamental as well.

Beauty Berry grows its berries along the stems and I don't think they are edible (humans at least). They come in several colors (dark purple is the most common).

Will have to get some elderberry, thank you!

My dark purple BB bloomed starting a long time ago. Not quite sure who has been eating the berries though. They just disappear so I am guessing not the dogs and probably the birds. Elderberries are used to make products sold to help fight cold and flu symptoms.
