Sorry but not all succulents are the same, not sure there is ONE response. Not all succulents want to go completely dry. If it's a big pot, the top 2 or 3 inches don't really tell a lot, certainly not what's going on deep down in the roots, where trouble can start.

Could you perhaps specify several different kinds of succulents you might be thinking of?

It may or may not be 'good' - depends on soil. Many of us prefer to improve drainage by adding plenty of sifted perlite or pumice, and sometimes grit. That makes a mix (not soil) that drains very well. Using a skewer helps - stick a bamboo/wooden skewer or thin dowel with sharpened end (or even pencil) deep down into mix. One needs to water when mix is dry all the way to the bottom. If plant is in soil, and only top few inches are dry, roots may be still sitting in a muck.

I keep succulents in very inorganic mix (no soil, or if any - maybe 10% of total). They are all outside, being rained on - np, since the mix dries very well.

Factors include: Dormancy period. Some are summer dormant, some winter dormant. Spare to sometimes no water when dormant.

Climate: in a more humid climate (FL) less water. In a very low-humidity climate, (Palm Springs) possibly more.

Indoors different than outdoors.

Light level.

Planting Medium.

Recent and immediate future temperature.

As nil13 posted, knowing the species matters. What are the conditions in the plant's native range?

I have many plants and many different species. Just wondered in general. I am growing a couple in doors. The snake plant, the african spear and a moon cactus. Some in large pots and some small.

Can't tell from your wording if you know this but African Spear IS a type of Snake plant (Sansevieria), in case you didn't know.

Well, I have a lot. From portulacaria afra, kalanchoe luciae, aloe vera, different types of echeveria, string of bananas, crassula erforata, christmas cactus, aeonium and many more. Can't list all of them. I guess I just wanted a round about time frame like maybe night time or day or when the top 1-3 inches are dry or the soil is all the way dry.
