Jon, mine is going into its third year and is 20" wide and 10" high. It receives late afternoon sun but it is a slow grower.

Mine is about 4 years old. Based on yours I am further convinced it needs more sun. The current spot is really shady. It is also very late showing up in the Spring which makes the shade condition even worse. Thanks.

I saw a big one at Crooked Creek. It was in full sun. Crazy thick leaves. It really felt like they were made of plastic.

Mine has also been very slow . It grew faster after I put it in a spinout bag. Maybe it needs more sun.

Jim, the leaves are really thick, I really like it. Hmm, full sun, I think I have just the spot for it. It isn't full sun but it will be in sun for a few hours and more bright shade. Thanks

MadPlanter, Mine doesn't have any root competition. It does seem to be a bad spot for other hostas as well so up it comes and into a brighter future. It is small enough that I can dig it up and it won't even know it's been moved.

I have moved mine multiple times trying to make it happy. It turns into a mini for the next year every time. It’s been in this place for two years now and I have high hopes that it likes it here because this is it’s forever home. Alligator Alley looks similar and is more vigorous but I’m glad I have both. I like thick substance in the leaves and I like the look of both of them.

I also found this one to be slow but it got moved last fall. It lived on the west side of the house where I thought it would be happy. Unfortunately, that side gets a bit ignored...so it didn’t get much supplemental water. I take the blame.

I haven’t lost many but lost RH. My thought was that it may not have been from a strong tissue culture batch. I’d definitely try it again.

I had great hopes for it, purchased in fall of 2017. This spring the tree trimmers took all the new growth off and it didn't look like it was coming back so I ordered another one. Well the original popped up so I planted the two together. Here is the picture, they are pretty but not big, in shade (gets a little morning light), Maybe next year it will get growing.

I bought a RH last summer. Placed in mostly shade by receives some morning sun. It does have thick waxy leaves. No flower last year and nothing so far this year. I’ll Try a picture tomorrow with light. It’s dark now.

I can’t seem to get the photo to load. I’m using my iPad Pro - likely photo too large? Don’t know how to resize. It shows that it is there under my text but a bit grayed out... on old iPad the photo took a few seconds to load from gray to clear. Help!?

edited to say my photos are “live” so settings have to be adjusted...did that but still doesn’t work

I finally resorted to old iPad. Today's photo. Rhino Hide did well over the winter. (It did not bloom last year.). It is a beauty regardless of its slow growth.

Oh, it looks better already! I tell you I LOVE my new Root Slayer shovel. Slices right through the small roots and you get a nice even cut all around and a sweet plug.

Yes, Amazon, Just don't believe that sawing part of it. The guy in the video is one tough dude. I resorted to my digging pole for the big roots. Nice and slick cutting out a hosta and digging out a new home.

When I dug it up I did find a lot of roots that I never expected. The new sight was clear of roots. Hopefully it will perk up. If I made a good move

Not sure if RH prefers shade, or just more consistent moisture, but this one is doing well after I moved it out of so much sun.

Rhino Died....thrice. I couldn't do it any more. I tried full sun, dappled sun, shade, you name it. Just dead.

windy- It seems as if moisture plays an important role. I didn't pay to much attention to that as it was in a shady spot. It was under a canopy so that might have added to it's thirst. It is in the front yard now so it will get watered. I expect great things now. It is about the same age as yours and half the size so you are doing well.

I have bought two of them. The one I bought in 2015 is much smaller and it's in shade. The other I bought in 2016 a larger plant when I got it and it's grown better in more sun.

The first two pictures are the larger one next to Orange Marmalade. The third picture is the smaller one next to Maui Buttercups. I have carefully fertilized both and tried to provide enough water. I think it's hard to grow.

most tetraploids are smaller thicker leaves and slooooow growers
