1K isn’t pricy at all. A 6” duct won’t physically even pass 850 CFM. If someone is high on something like that, look for their self interest in importing it.

I was thinking that too- that 6" is probably not enough for 850 cfm. I have no idea, but I wonder if the efficiency can be increased by increasing the duct size.

I hope the hood at the link isn't actually used in a Chinese restaurant kitchen.

Unfortunately, the way the plume is illuminated makes it difficult to see what portion might be escaping the hood.

To add a missing comment: The rated flow rate of the blower will be significantly higher than the actual flow rate -- perhaps by 1.5X. The actual flow rate, divided by the duct sectional area (in square feet) should result in a flow velocity between 1000 and 2000 ft/min. This is to balance grease accumulation by condensation against grease accumulation by impingement.

Christina, no I did not end up getting this. Rather, I decided on an insert and a custom cabinet box (my husband is a cabinet maker - lucky me!). I do still like the idea of the Fotile, but I have imagined whacking my forehead on the narrow edge. (That is not why I did not choose it.)

Good to know! I don’t see myself getting whacked in the head, but my husband may have to watch out. We do plan on seeing it in person to see if this is something to be concerned about.

I've also been looking into Fotile hoods, and am not sure I know enough to understand their HVI certification numbers. I downloaded all the HVI certified hoods and test numbers from the HVI site, and while not the claimed 850-1000 CFM, Fotile fans in general seem to have excellent performance, particularly when compared to other hoods. (IIRC, all range hood companies I've looked at report higher CFM than HVI.)

Here are three Fotile fans I've looked at (all tested using 6" vertical ducting and SP 0.1):

EMG9030 (36" wall): boost speed, 660 CFM, 7.5 sones, 223 watts

low speed, 280 CFM, 1.2 sones, 29 watts

JQG9001 (36" under cabinet): high speed, 520 CFM, 6 sones, 256 watts

low speed, 230 CFM, 1.2 sones, 85.5 watts

JQG7505 (30" under cabinet): boost speed, 580 CFM, 7.5 sones, 143 watts

low speed, 220 CFM, 1.2 sones, 20 watts

Note that I’ve not included all tested speeds, just highest and lowest.

I've also been considering Zephyr (they're in HVI, so I can compare) and Vent-a-Hood (not in HVI, so I can't). Here’s a Zephyr I’m considering (tested using 8” vertical ducting):

AK7637AS (36” wall): high speed at SP 0.1, 650 CFM, 10 sones, 305 watts

working speed at SP 0.005, 150 CFM, 0.6 sones, 17.5 watts

A couple other other typical fans:

Dacor DHD30M700WS chimney hood, 6” duct, SP 0.1, boost speed 480 CFM, 10 sones, 451 watts

Best ICB3I36BLSB chimney, 8” duct, SP 0.1, high speed 580 CFM, 11.5 sones, 350 watts

If I compare like speeds, for any fan I’ve looked at, the Fotile always seems to look quite good, with less noise and power consumption, and typically with smaller ducting.

Am I missing something here, or might Fotile be a good range hood for me?

The actual flow has to account for the entire ducting path (varies with installation) and the make-up air path and design. Pressure losses in these will reduce the hood flow rate relative to however they were tested by themselves.
