Can you give more information? How tall do your Clematis get? What style is your garden?

1. Make your own trellises to any size you like.
2. Grow them up a fence and allow them to trail along the top on either side.
3. Allow them to grow into decidious trees or large shrubs.

I had a free-standing arbor built for mine. I couldn't do any digging in this area due to the utility lines. So it has above-ground feet as a base on either side. I got the idea from free-standing supports for porch swings. The fence behind is approximately 5' so the arbor is over 6' tall and the stems can grow up and over.

This is early in the season. By now, you can't even see the arbor. The clematis has already completely swallowed it. This is what i believe to be a Jackmanjii and I refer to it as "the clematis that ate Arvada" (that's the town I live in). It's a beast. If it weren't so pretty, I would call it invasive.

I have the clematis growing against the garage brick wall and currently have a black metal trellis. The trellis is about 6 feet tall (one foot down in the ground) and the clematis seems to want to grow 6-7 feet tall. (Rouge Cardinal). I have a homemade wood one in the back with a Presidents clematis but end up stringing twine up for it as the wood is too thick for it to grab ahold of.

I never thought of those brick clips! I love Lee Valley. They have such cool things. I've seen them at Home Depot as well. Going to be prepared next year and get some of these. I like that no drilling into the brick is required.

Jackmanii and every Type III need pruned down short every year or they become a dense twiggy mess. That huge purple clem could be Polish Spirit which in my experience does grow that big....

My husband built wooden trellises for me with cedar lattice and they are 9 and 11 feet tall and my Clems still reach the top and flop back down. They don't climb lattice well so I recommend wire grids instead.

Thank you for the info, buyorsell888. You could be right about the variety. I've never heard of Polish Spirit. Unfortunately, I never kept the tag when I planted this one. All I know is, it's a monster. It also created a baby that I have on the other side of my yard. It isn't quite as big, but I fear it may be one day.

Believe it or not, I did prune this one back to about 3-4' tall in the early spring.
