how to kill poplar sprouts

This year seems to be particularly bad for poplars sending up baby sprouts. They are shooting up in places they have never been before.

Yes, I am quite sure these are poplar, some are black poplar, some are what we call cotton wood, most are green poplar (aspen).

I can mow them down in my lawn but that seems to encourage more to pop up. I have hand pulled too many to count out of my garden beds this year.

But they are also coming up in the bush, too many to hand pull.

Could I snip and paint them with round-up? As much as I don't care for the mature trees from which I

am sure they are coming it would be a pain if they died.

Thanks for the help.
