Choose your tile AFTER you choose your countertop

    Yes to that^^^

There are millions of tile choices, but limited countertops to try to match existing tile...

Yup, backsplash choice comes last. Take the backsplash tile off the table until everything else is installed. It is very difficult to choose a backsplash before seeing everything else in place.

Certain choices are driven by cost. The cabinets and backsplash tile are staying. The backsplash tile is a basic white square tile and we’re using the epoxy/paint for the grout. The cabinets are well-made, high quality dark cherry cabinets. Now we’re choosing countertop, and I’d love your thoughts on the three we like.

    I like Materazzo

What color are you painting the grout in the backsplash?

I think Materazzo would likely work best with your current picks. My second fav is Taj Mahal but I worry that the backsplash will not work great with it. A sample of each would be great so that you could bring it home & see it in your lighting & space with the other samples.

I would personally go for the 3rd option. All 3 are gorgeous but the 3rd color wise is a mix of the first 2. It has enough white to go with the backsplash but yet has the bit of brown to warm it up and go with the cabinets

Planning to paint the grout either white or a soft gray.

with all the info given, number 3.... it's the only one that compliments your floor and cabs, the soft gray grout will help to tie in the B/S..

i know u said cost is an issue with b/s, but can u use the same brand of tile in a different color, say soft gray or an off -white. that white is very stark & i am afraid that your eye is going to drawn to it because of the 'whiteness' & not to the beautiful counter....they usually have the same tile in different colors for the same price point or very close to it.

Since posting I’ve done some research on Houzz and the excellent resources as shared by many including karin mt , that indicates that #3 - the Materazzo - is classified by some stone yards as a dolomite. I haven’t tested the particular slab myself, which I know is the only way to really know, but that does raise big concerns. I’d love to consider some other stones that would work better with the white backsplash and dark cherry traditional cabinets. Any suggestions?

The Calacatta slab was very light and had bright white in it - do you still think it wouldn’t work?

Chances are good that you will damage your existing backsplash either with the current countertop removal, or the installation of your new one. Do you have spare tiles? If not, I would rip it all out, repair the drywall and paint it. Live with a painted backsplash until you can put a new backsplash up that goes with your new countertops. You're looking at such beautiful stones, I would not choose anything based on your old backsplash and painted grout.
