He looks like one of the Anomala leaf chafers. Very cute. Very naughty. Do you have a large number of them? If it's just a few, knock them into soapy water.

If a lot, you might have to just plan for dealing with next year's gang in the larval stage before the adults get to the garden.

Hi Fori, thanks for your input! Yes kind of cute, but a pain. I have seen a few under the soil in my vegtrug planter. They look almost dead. You mention the "larval stage" - about when is that? I also have zinnias planted in my vegtrug and they are barely touched - the ones I am complaining about are next to daylilies, hostas and Rose of Sharon in a teeny area (not in the vegtrug), if that's relevant.
