I can only imagine how beautiful this rose can be with a little TLC. Mine gets no care at all. It's never been fed, fertilized, deadheaded or pampered. My husband whacks it back every few years so he can mow in front of it. I think it's a rose you grow for it's impact as a whole, not for the individual blooms, necessarily. Being as large as it is, it makes quite a statement and adds color to an area that may be hard to reach for constant care. I hope yours does well for you.

Other than being a pretty spectacular rose, after looking at those spiky canes I see this as a great burglar deterrent if planted under the windows. Of course you probably wouldn't be able to see out the window or escape through it in case of a house fire. Well, for a moment there it seemed like a good idea.......

Oldrosarian, your Wm. Baffin looks plenty generous to me. It also looks as though you take good care of it. I am now motivated to give mine some rose food and then some manure before winter.

Ingrid, your idea would definitely discourage burglars from trying to get in a window it's planted under and trap them if they tried! I fell face first into one by leaning just a little too far while trying to dead head it many years ago. Thought I'd never extract myself from it's clutches. My clothes were all attached to those thorns as well as my skin. I have not dead headed them since.
