kitchen colors?

What do I do with this kitchen? I hate it no matter what I do. The problem is the lack of money to change the things I hate. We have dark trim all over the house so that has to stay. I just don't want to paint it all. Can't afford to change the ugly beige floors or counters either (the kitchen island is white) :-( I did get the ok to paint the cabinets, but I'm so scared to. Once I do it I can't go back. It's not like they're quality or anything. I'm pretty sure they're hand made, at least the frame work is. But I've painted cabinets before and hated them and white was so hard to keep clean and I'm afraid of that again. I hate the ovals on the doors! I just don't know how to make it look nice in there without changing the counters and floor! There is grey everywhere in my house now and I love it. The only beige left is in the kitchen and the carpet, which I hope to pull up and just deal with plywood floors for a while. What color could I paint the walls and/or cabinets that would go nicely with the beige in the kitchen but also go with the grey and navy that I have in the rest of the house? If it was closed off it wouldn't be so bad, but you can see the kitchen from the living room and playroom. We had doors to close off the washer/dryer, but there was something wrong with them so they were taken off and who knows when my husband will ever get around to fixing them.

I'd consider a muted green for the walls. For the laundry room, is the entry too wide for a tension rod? You could put up an inexpensive curtain temporarily if the view bothers you. FWIW, I've seen way worse kitchens than yours out there. With a bit of imagination and elbow grease, rooms can be transformed. I recall one owner removing the 'ugly' cabinet doors in the pantry area. (Open shelving isn't practical for everything and everyone.) Lightened the whole room. Painting cabinets is a daunting project and I can understand not wanting to undertake it. Look into other ways you can revamp your space. One thing that helps me with my kitchen is focusing on what works in the space (grateful the layout and storage work, for example). It helps me 'forget' what I dislike about it.

ETA: Here's an article on kitchen makeovers from Apartment Therapy at different price points. Perhaps you'll find some inspiration.

I suggest covering the doors with molding that is wide enough to cover the ovals. Then paint the cabinets, doors, molding and all. If you don't like white then do a different color. Just that will transform your space.

    For color ideas, navy blue.

It is a lot of work but worth it and it is cheap if you diy.

I am very grateful that I live where I do. Sorry if it sounded like I was complaining and ungrateful. I was just asking for color ideas because I really need a change. Nothing wrong with wanting to make it look better.

You are right that there is nothing wrong with not liking the place you live. I hate that when people go “oh but it could be so much worse”. Yes we all know it could be and some of us have been there. What the home owner is wanting is advice on color choices or budget design help. Not personally attacks.

First off, the floor doesn't look bad at all. Secondly I would paint the ceiling whiter and also the block that has the lights hanging from it. It is distracting and one color for the ceiling and that would make a huge change. Then I would choose a paint color like BM SMOKEY TAUPE. It's a neutral that blends well with wood, right now the beautiful blue is chopping up the room as it's dominant. I would remove the rugs and paint the tiles a soft green-blue tone but subtle, maybe something like this which would draw the eye to the beauty of the color and bring attention to the floor. I would add a creamy tone rug under the table and another small light one in front of sink. I would pay no attention to the ovals. I'd visit thrift shops and fine a few really cute pieces that have some of the same soft tones. By bringing white to the walls and ceilings it camouflages the box type sections near the ceiling, they all need to be creamy white and your place will look bigger and brighter. Hang a few plants in your big window frame and eliminate the curtains. Just some ideas for you.

Quite honestly, there really isnt much wrong with your kitchen. You dont have a lot of countertops, so clearing off what you have would do wonders for the look. The microwave can be moved to a stand on the other side of that tall pantry closet. Your flooring looks to be in excellent condition. Your counters look to be in excellent condition (at least in the pictures.) Its clean and its cheerful. put up a tension rod and some nice looking drapery panels on the opening, so you are not looking at a washer and a dryer. I would also put new draperies on the big window (cant see if you have them on the window over the sink) because, they blend right in, and I had to really look to see if you had any draperies at all. Personally, I like the color on the walls, and on the soffits, however, I do not like it on that piece of soffit that is over the island with the lights on it. Paint that white like the ceiling, so it doesnt make the room look so choppy.
