Generous Sans Group - Sans ‘Green Mermaid’ ???

First, I would like to thank several of you who sent me some Sans to replace the ones I lost

this past Winter. It is greatly appreciated, and honestly, it restored some of the lost joy in my life! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Secondly, someone is selling this Sans called ‘Green Mermaid’ and I have never heard of it. I told her it looks like a ‘Nelsonii’ to me, and she insists it’s a ‘Green Mermaid.’ What do you guys think?

Mary978 - I hear the name 'Green mermaid' for the first time too.

This is not 'Whitney' but definitely Sans. trif. 'Banded Nelsonii' as you suspected.

A beautiful plant and I like it very much, but my copy grows very slowly

wow, that is cool. I have been looking for banded nelsonii for years. The links I posted are a description and an article about the patent. From the description of the leaves they sound like they would be very stiff and thicker .

@ewa321, your plant is beautiful! I do believe the plant for sale is a ‘Nelsonii’, so let’s see.

@akrrm, I’ve been looking for a ’Nelsonii’ also, and can’t wait to get this to see what happens.... maybe it can replace in my heart my 2 beautiful ‘Whitneys’ that I lost this past Winter, since those were my favorite Sans. I also found those 2 links yesterday when I was researching, but I still have my doubts that this is not just another name for ‘Nelsonii’ ...IDK

akrrm - thank you for the links, good to know :)

'Green Marmaid' is the last one signed in this link, and it looks completely different than 'Banded Nelsonii' - the leaves are more silver.

'Banded Nelsonii' is perhaps similar to the one in the middle, which was signed as 'Black Princess Sandy'.

Anyway, 'Black Princess Sandy' is a new plant from last year (new patent), and 'Banded Nelsonii' was described in 1986 by J. B. Chahinian.

The article is from 2018, so the plants are definitely for sale and I want to have 'Black Princess Sandy very much too :))

    Mary978 - thank you :)

'Banded Nelsonii' is not the same plant as from the link.

It's very old plant - from 1986 and those from the link are new :))

@ewa321... thanks... I read all that, but the seller is calling the middle one in that picture ‘Green Mermaid’ that’s what confused me.

Mary - I absolutely understand, there is still a problem with sellers ;)

When I buy a new plant, I always check it with reliable sources or put foto to any group on fb for ID, they always help :)

    Mary978 thanked ewa321

@ewa321... you were right... I found a seller in Brazil (I think, I only understand a little bit of Portuguese) :) that is selling that same plant as a ‘Black Princess...

With the older types they have no patent rights so I think they are stealing rights to old plants. They may be new to them but old to the plant world. Who watches over the patent office?? Just my opinion here but not new to me.

I found a catalog online, it looks like green mermaid is the dark one.

Wow! Thanks Nancy... the other pic from the Patent office is labeled wrong I guess... I hope you‘re able to get yours!

Mary, I just saw your picture in the trouble with cylindrica post. Very nice. I couldn't find the seller you gave me but I did find a shop in Kansas that's sending me one. I found them on Instagram. Jungle House in Lawrence, KS if anyone is interested in ordering one. They are in an 8 inch pot, $50 and whatever your shipping would be. I definitely can't buy anything else, ever, lol

Wow Nancy... I’m so happy you found one... that’s too much money for me to spend, but I’ll try and find the FB lady again.

*** Update; so the pic I shared on this post with the 3 new varieties is not labeled correctly. The first one is ‘Frozen’ the second ‘Green Mermaid’ and the third is def not a ‘Black Princess Sandy.’ I found one website that has labeled color pictures of the 3:

    ‘Frozen’...

    ‘Green Mermaid’...

    ‘Black Princess Sandy’... gorgeous!

As you can see, that ‘Black Princess Sandy’ in the original pic looks nothing like this...

the mystery of that Third plant continues... Haha!

    Hello all!
I have been looking for a banded nelsonii and cannot seem to find one. Does anyone have any leads on where I might be able to find one? Thanks 😊

Sounds confusing to me to have so many names for some thing so similar that they may be the same plant or growing conditions. Nelsonii banded or Green Mermaid or even a taller growing Whitney. To me they look the same? Close enough that I don't need them all in my collection.

With my Whitney growing to about 24 inches which is much taller than what a Futura should grow to.

    @Stush2049
Your Whitney is so beautiful, thanks for sharing your photo! I can't believe it grew to be so tall. I have a single Whitney pup that I bought last year. It's still only about 5 inches, I'm waiting patiently for it start growing. Hopefully mine will grow to yours height 💚

Thank you. I use my own potting mix. Mostly my old compost pile of grass clippings with some old maple leaves from my trees. I mix some 'chicken grit' in for drainage and use Alfalfa meal pills sold for people use (I think they don't sell that anymore). Since switching I notice my plants grow bigger and better.

Oh my gosh, that's crazy awesome! When did you make the move from store bought soil? How did you come up with your mixture?

I have a large compost pile for my garden and every thing grows great in this stuff. I also have a few very finicky Sans that was doing poorly and almost never had any new growth. Was about to give up on them so I guess, why not. So I planted them up in the stuff pure. That was in early summer and by fall, it grew a new leaf plus two pups. Since then, most my my plants are in this stuff. Now using it 100% is good but it compacts down and gets hard after a few years so mixing in the perlite at about 20% or using some Chicken Grit resolves that problem.

I also heard about using alfalfa meal from a Hosta grower. You can get two years growth out of every year. So I started to use it in my soil mixture with super great results. You can't over use it but it will bring fungus grunts if over used.

They sell a produce called 'Stump Tea'. It is a compost tea mix. A little goes a long way. Maybe a teaspoon to a gallon. And only maybe twice a year or so. Don't let it get on the leaf and dry or else it could cause rot or a stain on the leaf. You'll have to Google it to find where to buy it. There is a store about 10 miles from me that sell it powered or even mixed in liquid form. On Tuesdays, they give every customer two gallons free. You have to bring your own gallon container. There mix is very strong and those two gallons are mixed about 10 to one for my use. On outside garden plants you could use full strength.

So cool! That is the best story. I love happy endings! Haha I've never heard them called fungus grunts before😂 Very fitting. Darn little things! Thank you for the tips. I don't have a compost pile, do you think I could add that stuff into the store bought soil that I've been using?🤞

Miracle Grow cactus mix is closest to use I've found. By all means yes.

Any recent leads to Green Mermaid ? Been looking for a few months now & unfortunately no luck. Still hopeful to find one eventually.

    Dan,

Have you tried under ‘Nelsonii’ to increase your odds of finding one?

@Stush2049 Pitts. PA, zone 6, yes, I've tried searching on 'Nelsonii' as well. So far, appears both are either in high demand and/or low supply at them moment. Really hoping growers/suppliers would make more available in the coming months. Ill keep positive and continue the search. May be one day, I'll get lucky enough to score a Mermaid, Nelsonii or possibly Both 😉

I don't have Nelsonii or the Mermaid but I have a Whitney. I might have a small start I can send you if you want the mid-size one. Personally I don't want any of the tall ones anymore. I do like the mid-sized better. The futura group.

I also have some all green Futura to give out. They were started from stem cuttings.

    To anyone.

Hey Stush, how are you my friend? I'm trying to get back into being here and renewing acquaintances. I've had some health issues for a long time, going thru testing right now and so far so good.

If no one else asks for your last Future I would like one. I don't know if I have a trade that would interest you but I will always pay postage. Man you grow Futura's and Hahnii's well!!

Russ my friend, no problem. On their way. My health was a little on/off. God blessed me and I'm praying for you. How's all your other plants faring?

Hi Stush2049 - if it's not too much trouble, a starter Whitney would be great. I don't have anything to trade; however, can cover shipping cost. Let me know. Thanks 🙂

    Dan,

I got recent picture of one of my taller Sans. 'Mein Liebling' that looks similar to what your looking for. Unfornately it is a slow grower and not much in pups.

It may give you something else to look for.

Stush, that's beautiful. I'll definitely add the "Mein Liebling" to my watch for list. Thank you for the tip.

Hey! Not sure if you were still looking but there's a banded nelsonii on a Facebook group that was posted 3 hours ago. It's listed for $50 for 1 stock plus shipping.

I also was in contact with an Etsy seller that said they will have green mermaid and banded nelsonii ready in a couple months. He never gave a price for how much they will be though

@Jessabell, Awesome ! Would happen to know the name of the FB group ?

I took a screen shot of it for you. You have to request to join, it's a private group. I've been on it for a month now, it's amazing to see all different varieties people have! A different person has a Mein Liebling for sale too. Hahaha my husband hates that I found this group 🤣

    Thank you @Jessabell

    @Dan
    Totally!!

Sooooo….. Banded Nelsonii looks very similar but they’re not identical or not 2 different names for the same variety/sport/whatever, unlike “Whitney” & “Silver Flame,” I think, having learned they’re equivalent after agreeing to pay for an unseen Silver Flame when told it was “super rare.” And we all know “rare” rarely means rare these days, so I thought this person was reliable. Maybe she didn’t know. Anyhow, I first read about “Green Mermaid” here around the beginning of last year:

    https://thehouseplantguru.com/2019/08/03/more-exciting-new-houseplants-aglos-and-more/

    http://www.turriplantas.com/single-page.php?id=6&lang=en

It took me until last fall to find it available, & of course paid way too much, but was obsessed for whatever reason 😏 I have been equally obsessed w trying to find the “Black Princess Sandy” since, but think I randomly just did, & @ Home Depot no less!? I rarely even look at their house plants, but making multiple trips this week due to major diy renovations, I needed a moment’s distraction. Still not entirely convinced because I’ve seen others incorrectly labeled, but doesn’t seem to have near the amount of lighter green Black Coral has. (You can easily find the patent, hence description, but it’s far from one that leads to automatic ID!?)

Those 3-4 plants have already given me several babies so I’m definitely not opposed to sharing/trading, esp for the aforementioned Banded Nelsonii, a true Silver Queen, or Singer’s Silver (which has proven even harder to find after mine was frozen), among others, if anyone discussing it here is interested. I have a LOT of aroids, so open to those, Hoya, & well, lots of stuff 😬

I’m horrid at checking messages &/or following up on convos, but will try~just assume it won’t be immediately 🤷🏽‍♀️

@Heather Barton I have some leaf cuttings of the silver queen that are producing pups. I would be happy to send them to

you for the price of postage if you want them. Cuttings produce juvenile plants but their pups will get larger. Here is a photo of them.

Heather, I under stand finding something and wanting. But so similar items to me is the same thing. Maybe some tiny small differences but when plants get 4 feet tall and over a foot wide and so much trouble bring in and out every year and all the space they take up. I am happy with the maybe 10 or so varieties I already own unless some thing really different comes along. Now not so with the futura and hahnii class of Sansevieria plus all the tiny hybrids of other Sans species. Trying to limit myself with about 100. (I know less but never counted).

Getting time now to start to bring them all in.
