Small Kitchen Design Help

Hi Everyone,

I would like some advice on how to maximize space in this kitchen. I’d ideally like to have wall cabinets that go to the ceiling and add cabinets to surround the stove.

What design ideas do you have? It’s a 1940’s cape cod house so I would like to stay away from anything contemporary.

White shaker style cabinets is what I was thinking and a light gray counter.

I’ve attached some current photos. Thoughts, advice, recommendations??

Can you sketch out the current floor plan? Using graph paper is lovely but not necessary.

Just a sketch with dimensions in inches for every wall, including current windows and doors (how wide and where are they along the wall) and any other openings. Also note any oddball challenges like windows lower than counter height, existing chimneys from the basement that can’t be removed, existing plumbing, etc.

edit to add: I am personally sort of (edit again: highly) allergic to curly-Q trim like your current kitchen has, but even pushing that aside, the trim around the window by the door definitely reduces your light. I’d get rid of that ASAP.

Are you planning on a complete gut renovation? What is your budget? How does the kitchen relate to the rest of the home?

I would reduce the width of the filler to the left of the DW, and use a narrower, single-bowl sink--narrow enough to allow space for a super susan in the corner. Make sure the sink has a positive reveal, to accept an integrated cutting board, for extra counter space when needed, and use an undersink trash pull-out (if plumbing permits). Put a drawer base to the right of the range, and use a hood above. I hate to suggest an over-the-range MW, but in this case it could save space.

Get a standard-depth fridge that opens right-to-left, and use all drawer bases on that side of the kitchen. If your budget can support 30" deep drawer bases you can squeeze in some extra storage, but if custom deep drawers are out, then pull standard bases forward, with a deeper counter. You can also use deeper uppers on both sides--Ikea makes 15" & 18" uppers. Good luck!

Ideally, we would like to spend a max of $7,000 installed- we would replace cabinets and countertop. It’s a tiny kitchen and not a forever home, but need to make it more functional.

Here is a custom design someone did for me. It is $7,500 installed, without countertop. I had asked for the glass doors in the sink wall but maybe it would be less expensive without the glass. However, I feel like the glass adds a lot to the room.

Here are some measurements of the kitchen.

Also, the window above the dishwasher is at 13” from the start of the wall so the wall cabinets on the sink wall cannot be deeper than 13”.

Agree with mama goose. Make that filler minimal by DW. We had just enough to clear the trim in last kitchen when every inch counted. Make sure wall paint is durable. Take those extra inches and get good storage in that corner. Sink cabinet can be smaller. Can't quite figure out what's going on on the frig wall. Is there plumbing and or vents in the bump out to left of frig?

The bump out next to the fridge is a coat closet.

I never want to give up closet space, but can the coat closet be sacrificed? If so, you’d have another 24 inches of kitchen.

Thank you! What is to the right of the frig? Is it a doorway or on the wall of the exterior door?
