thanks Ken. i know the fact that most of the vegetables are annuals. i had self seeded mustard greens and lettuces last year which grow back this year super nicely. so i am wondering about how far i can go with fall planting some annual vegetable seeds.

Depending on where you are, "fall" planting is usually done by July 15th. As the days shorten (and cool down) the plants will need a few extra days to finish. Cole crops (cabbage, mustard-which you mentioned, brussels sprouts, kale, spinach, broccoli, etc.) can be planted until mid-summer for fall harvest.

I will say, as someone who gardened for many years, I personally never had much luck with fall planting, eventually giving up on it. <grin>

Radishes might be something to try NOW as they mature fairly quickly.

I've tried spinach, radishes and Swiss chard with no luck at all. Things that reseed are pretty much accidental around here, tomatoes, for instance.

I always have tons of spinach that reseeds itself and sometimes even lettuce, so no reason that you couldn't sow these things just prior to the ground freezing in the autumn. Oh, though my zone is stated as 4, last winter was pretty darn nasty and a solid zone 3.

Fall planting for spring growing is different than the typical fall planting done in zones warmer than 2 or 3 where you might get a fall harvest. I would certainly try a few things that do like the cold. Peas, however I would not expect to work as they can rot in cold wet soil, carrots, lettuce, radish, spinach might work. It is worth a shot and maybe if I get my garden organized I might try some as well.
